8 Things You Need to Do in East Central Indiana

While studying is important, it’s key that your college years include a little fun, too. And in East Central Indiana, plenty of cool activities and experiences await. Before you kick the “educational bucket,” here is a list of local things you need to try to check off. But you never know – once you get out and explore the region, you might just want to stay even after you turn your tassel.

1. Hike and Bird-watch at Mary Gray Bird Sanctuary

This stunning and serene 700-acre nature preserve in Connersville, IN, is packed with all kinds of wildlife, not just birds. With plenty of great trails to choose from, it’s a must-hike destination, whether you bring your bird-watching binoculars or not. For an enhanced experience during your visit, try downloading a bird-identifying app before you go and see how many cool winged wonders you can spot along your adventure.

2. Listen to Music and Grab a Cocktail at Room 5 Piano Bar

A fairly new addition to the Muncie arts scene, Room 5 Piano Bar is an ideal place to listen to talented musicians while sipping on something delicious. The atmosphere is cool and inviting, and it’s the perfect place to hang with friends or go on a date (once you are 21, of course).

3. Visit Hoosier Hill, the Highest Point in Indiana

Sitting at 1,257 feet above sea level, this rural, out-of-the-way landmark (just north of Richmond) is worth the trip, even if it’s only for bragging rights. It has a few fun tricks up its metaphorical sleeve, though. At the very top, you’ll find a mailbox, where you can add your own sticker to the others that adorn it, plus you can sign the guidebook found inside.

4. Venture Out to Jacobs’ Family Orchard

A trip to this New Castle orchard is a must, especially in the fall. This family-owned and -operated farm has everything you could ask for in an autumn excursion: wagon rides, fresh produce and baked goods, including a free apple cider doughnut, which every visitor receives. They also make and sell their own apple cider, which is incredibly tasty.

5. Take a Class at the Cornerstone Center for the Arts

Don’t limit yourself to whatever coursework is required by your major – expand your horizons. The Cornerstone Center for the Arts in Muncie has so many incredible classes, from dance and martial arts to fencing, ceramics, stained glass, piano, guitar and more. Plus, the prices are incredibly affordable. Go by yourself and make new friends or take a buddy.

6. Enjoy Ice Cream at Ivanhoes

Located in Upland, this beloved ice cream joint is a regional favorite for a reason. Ivanhoes offers 100 – yes, you read that right, 100 – varieties of delicious shakes and sundaes, but that’s just the tip of the ice(cream)berg. Ivanhoes issues a challenge to any customer brave enough to attempt it: Try every single flavor, and you’ll become an official member of the 100 Club. With that achievement comes a free T-shirt, your name added to the 100 Club plaque and the full feeling of a job well done.

7. Catch a Race at Winchester Speedway

Racing culture is alive and well in Indiana, which has been home to the Indy 500 for more than 100 years. The state is filled with speedways scattered throughout, and East Central Indiana has its fair share – the most notable being Winchester Speedway in Randolph County. It’s the world’s fastest half-mile paved track. Be sure to check out its website, winchester-speedway.com, to stay in the loop on upcoming events.

8. Kayak the White River

This river meanders through Randolph, Delaware and Hamilton counties, though the best spot to go is probably Canoe Country, a canoe and kayak rental service in Daleville. You can rent kayaks, canoes and tubes, and the company provides transportation up the river, with your journey ending right where you started. It’s the perfect summer activity, and a great place to make some memories.
