For decades, coal has served the energy needs of the Commonwealth, Northern Kentucky – and Duke Energy customers – extremely well.

But as times change and technologies evolve, it’s important to keep learning about new and innovative options in the energy sector. These options may play a pivotal role in safely and reliably powering Kentucky for future generations.

Duke Energy and other investor-owned energy providers have launched Kentuckians for Affordable and Reliable Energy (KARE) to engage with customers, the business community, policymakers and the general public about Kentucky’s energy future. By signing up at kyaffordableenergy.com, anyone can elect to receive relevant news articles, policy updates and trends about the latest energy developments.

“It’s extremely important that our communities are involved and have a voice in the energy transition,” says Amy Spiller, Duke Energy Ohio/Kentucky State President.

“We hope KARE provides a baseline education and encourages people to join the conversation around this very complex subject.”

At the center of that discussion is the transition to cleaner forms of energy. As a company, Duke Energy is gradually transitioning away from coal-fired power plants.

“There’s a belief that coal is still the most affordable and reliable source of energy,” Spiller says. “But this isn’t necessarily the case anymore. Various factors influence the price  of coal generation, and it is not  always the most affordable option for consumers. One such factor is the price of generating renewable energy, which has come down greatly.”

Additional factors contributing to the growing expense of operating coal plants include changing energy prices, regulations and market dynamics. All of these changes will only intensify.

“Our fuel-agnostic approach is based on economics, reliability and safety,” says Spiller. “We are not going to make decisions that  leave our customers subject to avoidable outages or burdened  with undue cost. This is going to be a gradual transition.”
