When searching for a new job, people often have their eyes peeled for a position that meets their preferred job title and salary and offers opportunities for skill development and career advancement. However, especially in the last few years, location has become as important – if not more so. Thankfully, St. Joseph, MO, satisfies all of these requirements.

“St. Joseph is an ever-growing community that offers so much to those who live here,” says Matt England, president and CEO of Triumph Foods. “We have everything that a thriving city needs.”

Dominique Protzman, a nurse recruiter for Mosaic Life Care, agrees.

“In St. Joseph, there’s really something for everyone. If you’re looking for a reasonably priced housing market with safe schools, we have that,” she says. “St. Joseph is a smaller, eclectic town. We’re modernized in that we have the key staples: Target, Starbucks, a great downtown environment and an amazing walking trail that runs the entire distance of the city.”

Read on to learn more about St. Joseph’s job scene and four of its employers that are hiring.

1. Altec

A well-known employer in the region, Altec is a leading provider of products and services for those in the electric utility, telecommunications, lights and signs, tree care and contractor market.

“Our values are what really set us apart. We strive to create an environment that promotes teamwork where everyone can succeed,” says Jonathan Arens, director of operations.

In particular, the company looks to hire electrical techs, welders, assemblers, maintenance mechanics and engineers. And while Altec delivers products worldwide, its home base is where the heart lies.

“I have been at Altec for 18 years and love the culture that we have,” Arens says. “It’s one big family where team members are set up to be successful and learn new skills.”

The company offers numerous opportunities for career development.

“We have a training center where associates can get certified in welding and grow in skills like electrical assembly, hydraulic certifications and general assembly practices,” Arens says.

Altec also provides great benefits, including a tuition reimbursement program for bachelor’s and master’s degrees.

2. Triumph Foods

Homegrown and farmer-owned, Triumph Foods’ St. Joseph workforce tops 2,500.

“We process approximately 6 million hogs annually, making Triumph one of the largest pork processors in the United States,” England says.

The company offers industry-leading benefits and pay plus various opportunities for professional development. And there are a variety of career paths.

“We have more jobs than one may think,” England says.

In addition to pork production and operations support, the company offers a variety of career opportunities that include lab positions, clerical staff, human resources and recruiting and information technology.

Triumph also has a large on-site medical staff to support employees.

“Supplying food to a growing world is a noble cause and one that helps a lot of our team members feel proud of the work they do,” England says. “The average tenure of our team members is about 10 years, and that certainly says something about the commitment of those who work here, in addition to knowing that they can go home having contributed to a huge team effort.”

3. Mosaic Life Care

Mosaic Life Care is a physician-led health care system that runs three hospitals in Northwest Missouri. St. Joseph is home to the main campus, where Protzman started as a nurse in 2013. As her career evolved, she held several different positions.

“After leading our emergency department through the pandemic, I decided to invest my knowledge and experience into growing and promoting the careers of nurses and moved into HR to do so,” she says. “To an outsider it may look like I took a step back in my career, but really, I took leaps forward. I connected with my true passion.”

Protzman credits Mosaic with allowing her to flourish on her own terms.

“My organization supported that passion and placed me into a position that was going to allow me to thrive,” she says.

In terms of jobs, Mosaic is actively recruiting nurses, radiology technicians, and physical, occupational and respiratory therapists as well as patient care associates. In addition to Mosaic’s competitive salaries, Protzman says the health care system has “phenomenal benefits.”

For example, Mosaic offers health insurance, life insurance, a 401(k) match, a student loan repayment program, tuition reimbursement, certification bonuses and even pet insurance. Aside from technical proficiency, Protzman says the top skills Mosaic looks for include “innovation, kindness and a desire to work on a team. All our health care positions are integrated together in patient care, and it’s very important for us to find individuals that value teamwork.”

4. 139th Airlift Wing

Rounding out St. Joseph’s various career prospects is the 139th Airlift Wing, a unit of the Missouri Air National Guard. About 1,000 air personnel make up the unit, which operates the C-130 Hercules cargo aircraft.

“These individuals typically maintain civilian employment and commit one weekend a month, along with a two-week period annually, to military service at the Rosecrans Air National Guard Base in St. Joseph,” says Michael Crane, the 139th Airlift Wing’s public affairs superintendent. “Between 2020 and 2021, hundreds of our airmen were activated across Missouri to assist with COVID-19 testing sites and vaccination clinics. The wing has also supported relief efforts during floods, civil unrest, snow and ice storms and hurricanes.”

The 139th Airlift Wing has a variety of job openings, including aircraft maintenance, engineering, fire protection, food services, office administration, paralegal, accounting and information technology.

“Many of our positions currently offer a $15,000 sign-on bonus,” Crane says.

And you don’t have to be a veteran to apply.

“We welcome both civilians and individuals with prior military experience,” Crane says. “All recruits will complete U.S. Air Force basic training in Texas.”

Like Crane, once you’re in, you might get hooked.

“The daily challenge and the unpredictability of the next mission have kept me engaged for the past 20 years,” he says. “This job has taken me to various locations across the country and around the world, funded my education and provided immense satisfaction in contributing to the defense of our nation and democracy.”
