With a moderate climate and plenty of green and blue space, St. Joseph, MO, allows residents – and visitors – to recreate year-round. From hiking and biking to golfing and fishing, the fun never stops in this quaint, yet vivacious city.

“Many cities bigger than St. Joseph don’t have the number or variety of activities for residents of all ages,” says David Cavin, recreation programs and athletic facilities supervisor for the city’s Department of Parks, Recreation & Civic Facilities. “That and the location – it’s all very accessible.”

Ready to head outside? Here are 10 activities for outdoor lovers in St. Joseph.

1. Hike Along St. Joseph Parkway

It’s nearly impossible to experience St. Joseph without spending time on the green belt that runs throughout the city. Known as both The Parkway and The Boulevard, it consists of approximately 26 miles of paved paths and wide sidewalks, including more than 2 miles of Riverwalk along the Missouri River, from Heritage Park to downtown St. Joseph. There’s no better way to get to know the city than to walk The Parkway.

2. Go Mountain Biking and Explore River Bluff Trails Park

Located amid the bluffs of the Missouri River, this is part of what Cavin calls a massive trail system, not just in the park, but connecting Huston Wyeth Park, Remington Nature Center, Sunbridge Hills Conservation Area and several neighborhoods.

The park itself has miles of dedicated biking trails that provide challenges for riders of different skill levels. Plus, there are several multi-use trails for the slightly less adventurous that can be accessed from several trailheads and parking lots.

3. Play Your Favorite Sport at Bode Sports Complex

With more than a dozen recently resurfaced areas, Bode is ready for you to take your game to the next level. Basketball courts that feature lights, scoreboards and spectator seating make players feel like the pros. Plus, the brand-new futsal court (aka miniature soccer) allows for a quick, controlled version of a soccer game. For those who prefer paddle sports, the complex’s pickleball courts allow residents to try their hand at the latest craze.

The nearly 100-year-old Fairview Golf Course measures more than 6,000 yards and sits on over 200 acres. The course also has a driving range, practice putting green and short game and bunker practice areas. With tons of old-growth trees lining the fairways, it can be a technical course that provides fun challenges.

5. Take a Self-Guided Art Walk

Public art can be found throughout St. Joseph. For example, seven colorful murals adorn the walls of buildings all over the city. Learn about the history and spirit of the area through these vibrant pieces. Additionally, every year, the Allied Arts Council of St. Joseph presents a Sculpture Walk that showcases pieces from a variety of artists. And they aren’t just for show – they’re also for sale!

6. Play Bocce Ball at Hyde Park and Horseshoe at Noyes Sports Complex

Looking for a laidback space to hang out with friends? New, elevated lanes specifically designated for bocce ball are available at Hyde Park. Plus, Noyes Sports Complex offers 16 lighted horseshoe pits. The courts are named for Cavin’s grandfather, Ray, and Cavin hopes more people give the game a chance, as he has many fond memories of his family playing horseshoes.

7. Play Disc Golf at Bartlett Parkway Disc Golf Course

Bartlett Parkway Disc Golf Course runs parallel to The Parkway, and players use parts of the hiking and biking trail to travel from one hole to the next. The natural topography of the area makes for a sometimes rolling, but always interesting course that wends in and out of the trees. Concrete slabs serve as the tee at each hole and provide par information. Regular visitors love the fact that it combines the need for long drives as well as shorter, more technical throws.

In addition to the 18-hole disc golf course, there is a separate nine-hole course that’s great for younger players and those looking to learn the sport.

8. Swim at the Aquatic Park

Beat the heat and have a ball at the Aquatic Park. At just $4 for adults and $3 for kids, it’s an incredibly affordable way to spend the day. Large shade structures provide a break from the sun and serve as a great place to set up home base while everyone enjoys the pool, kiddie area, waterslides, diving boards, waterfall, vortex, zero-depth beach entry and lazy river.

9. Fish at Corby Pond

The recently upgraded Corby Pond has two separate fishing docks and fountains alongside gorgeous, relaxing scenery. Anglers try their hand at catching bluegill, perch and the occasional catfish. The docks provide access to parts of the pond that can’t be reached from the banks. The state requires a permit for fishing that can be purchased online.
Missouri sponsors several free fishing days. For those who just want to give fishing a try, two local library branches rent fishing gear to cardholders in good standing.

10. Explore the Treehouse for Everyone at Bartlett Park

A large, inclusive playground called the Treehouse for Everyone allows people of all ages and abilities to play together in an environment that is compliant, fun, creative and accessible. Built around an existing tree, the play area feels integrated into the park and is a great place to have a picnic and spend an afternoon. In addition to ramp access, the playground has slides, a web net climber, a sensory arch climber and sensory panels with adaptive swing technology, among other things. The playground is at the forefront of accessible and inclusive play and has been designated as an Inclusion National Demonstration Site.
