Dog owners looking to get out and about with their pets will have no trouble finding things to do in Greenville-Pitt County

Morgan May, community engagement coordinator for the Humane Society of Eastern Carolina, has personally vetted many of the best places to take dogs in Greenville. “Almost everybody I’ve met in Greenville is an animal lover, and most of our businesses are,” May says.

Trails

Greenville trails vary from primitive paths to paved walkways in sun and shade. While it is state law to keep pets leashed at all times, these trails are great places to walk with your animal companions.

With trailheads across the city, the Greenville Greenways offer miles of trails along the Tar River and near some of the city’s parks. “My personal favorite is Wildwood Park,” May says. “The trails are phenomenal; they’re right on the water.”

Breweries

An afternoon out with friends doesn’t have to exclude your pets. Nauti Dog Brewing Co. is an especially apt place to bring your pup. “They’re very dog friendly and tailored to dogs,” May says. “They have a turf patio area.”

On the first Sunday of every month, the Humane Society hosts an adoption event at Uptown Brewing Company. Pitt Street Brewing Company and MPourium also have patio spaces where dogs are welcome.

Restaurants

Several Greenville restaurants have outdoor patio spaces that welcome dogs. Mellow Mushroom’s patio has room for everyone, and you can take your pup to the nearby PetSmart afterward for a treat. Basil’s Restaurant & Pizzeria also has a roomy patio. For a downtown option, try Christy’s Euro Pub.

Pet Stores

For a treat or new toy, take your dog to the region’s PetSmart, Petco and Pet Supplies Plus. Leashed dogs are welcome inside the stores.

If you have to bring your dog on a shopping trip, May says some Greenville businesses allow dogs inside if they are well-behaved. “We always just like to call and ask, and a lot of the time they say yes,” May says.

Dog Parks

Located along the South Tar River Greenway is a newly remodeled off-leash dog park that has spaces for both large and small dogs. “People are really enjoying the new remodel,” May says.

Community Events

The annual Canine Crawl in October, hosted by the Humane Society, is a great way to meet other pet owners. With costume contests and a variety of vendors, the event brings together dog lovers across the community.

As always, it’s important to maintain proper control of dogs in public and always pick up after them. “Be a good canine parent so we can keep these environments clean,” May says.

Now that you know the best places to take dogs in Greenville, it’s time to head out for a fun afternoon or evening with your favorite four-legged friend. Enjoy!
