One of the many reasons residents enjoy living in Williston, ND, is access to a broad selection of excellent medical providers, from mental health services to a trusted hospital with a long legacy of care to a new venture with a vision of creating a regional health care center for the community. Here’s a quick look at what’s going on with health care in Williston.

Williston Square Clinic

Ground has been broken, and Sanford Health is moving forward with the planning process for establishing services to be offered at a multispecialty clinic at Williston Square, an innovative, mixed-use commercial and residential development on the site of the former Sloulin Field International Airport.

Sanford Health officials say they are continuing to work with the City of Williston to evaluate and meet the needs of the fast-growing area. In addition to specialty providers, plans are to offer primary care, a walk-in clinic, an infusion center, imaging equipment and a lab, making the facility a regional medical hub for northwest North Dakota and eastern Montana.

A new multispecialty clinic at Williston Square is coming soon.

“Our goal is for Williston to be a regional center for health care, and we are excited to further this vision,” says Dr. Todd Schaffer, president and CEO of Sanford Health’s Bismarck region.

“Expanding to Williston complements our current locations in Dickinson, Watford City, Minot and Bismarck-Mandan and enhances health care throughout our region.”

Williston Medical Center

For more than a century, CHI St. Alexius Health Williston has been a trusted neighbor, bringing quality health care to the region.

Williston Medical Center is a 25-bed critical access facility that offers a walk-in clinic and a 24-hour emergency department designated as a Level IV trauma center. A full range of clinic and hospital services, including general surgery, are available.

The primary clinic now has two cardiologists, two pediatricians and two women’s health providers offering 3D mammography and all aspects of pre- and postnatal care. The operating room is being completely remodeled and, when finished, the med/surg unit will undergo a total overhaul, including patient rooms and support areas.

The Leonard P. Nelson Cancer Center has provided oncology services since 1996 and is the first facility in CommonSpirit Health – one of the nation’s largest nonprofit health systems – to offer Scalp Cooling Technology. Simply put, it involves wearing a cooling cap while receiving chemotherapy.

Results may vary depending on the type of chemotherapy treatment, but, overall, the cap helps a patient retain 50% or more of their hair. By lowering the scalp temperature, the amount of blood flow containing the chemotherapy reaching the hair follicles is reduced.

“The Leonard P. Nelson Cancer Center has been providing service to patients living in the area for 27 years,” says Marti Volz, director of ancillary services.

“Patients undergoing radiation therapy come in daily for treatment, sometimes for multiple weeks in a row. Having to be away from home creates extra stress, as patients are more likely to have their support system close to where they live. We are proud to provide high-quality compassionate care nearby.”

Mental Health Advocate

Katie Shannon, the clinical director of ConnectUs Therapy, says the trauma-informed outpatient mental health clinic is excited to improve access to mental health care in the Williston area and advance the whole health of patients and community.

The clinic utilizes an integrated and collaborative approach to serve all ages. Whether it is trauma therapy, mental health work or addiction treatment, the ConnectUs focus is to bring healing to individuals and the root causes of their struggle.

Private and group therapies, medication management and medication-assisted treatment for substance use disorders are provided. The center also offers telehealth sessions for the convenience of its patients.

The clinic is a strong advocate for community outreach events addressing suicide prevention and mental wellness.

“A healthy community has several dimensions of wellness … and providing access to compassionate, informed mental health care is the part of wellness that ConnectUs is grateful to provide,” Shannon says.
