Opportunity knocks quite loudly at Kearney High School in Kearney, NE. In fact, the school offers so many clubs, activities, programs and career paths, students can open any door they choose.
“While it could be the modern facility that makes KHS stand out, it is really the remarkable students and staff inside the facility that make us the envy of the state,” says Kearney Public Schools Superintendent Jason Mundorf. “Our students are not only remarkable in academics, but they are also participants in athletics, arts and activities at the local, state and national levels. These experiences help prepare our students with lifelong skills, confidence and character that will make them leaders in life.”
Mundorf says the goal for the 1,500 students who attend KHS is to get them college- and career- ready. That effort is bolstered by partnering with the University of Nebraska Kearney (UNK) and Central Community College Kearney (CCC).

KHS Gets an A for Activities
Kearney High School won the Class A NSAA and NSCS Multi-Activity Student Award for two of the past three years and was runner-up one year. This award recognizes students in grades 9-12 who participate in at least three NSAA-sanctioned activities during the academic year.
Those activities range from soccer and one acts to journalism and orchestra. Bowling and girl’s wrestling are new for the 2023-24 school year.
“Kearney High School has an incredible student population,” says KHS Principal Jeff Ganz. “Involvement in activities and athletics has a direct correlation to success during high school and beyond.”
Kearney High School Has a Heart for Art
The Kearney High School Concert Hall and Theatre (CHaT) is one of only two in the country with its unique and impressive design. The theater was built for concerts but easily adapts to the school’s theater performances.
“From the extensive audio system and a high-tech video system to the movable ceiling that arranges lighting with the flip of a switch, this theater prepares students for modern productions anywhere in the world,” Mundorf says.
The House That Kearney High School Built
Kearney High School offers a unique opportunity for juniors and seniors interested in construction.
The tech house, as it’s called, is a home that is built and sold by students. The course, now in its 48th year, introduces students to basic skills, processes and materials necessary for construction of a single-family dwelling. The most recent home sold for $450,000.
“The Tech House program offers students a chance to take classroom learning to real-life applications,” Mundorf explains. “Students are involved in the construction of a home from start to finish. This is a unique experience that I have not encountered in any other educational setting.”
The Future Looks Bright for Kearney High School Students
Mundorf says future goals include adding a junior ROTC program and a teacher education program in conjunction with UNK. The school system is always looking for ways to connect with students.
“Kearney Public Schools is a state and national leader when it comes to opportunities for students,” Mundorf says. “With 15 Advanced Placement courses available, multiple courses at CCC and UNK for high school and college credit, an assortment of student organizations, renown musical and performing arts programs, and competitive athletic teams competing in any sport offered in Nebraska, Kearney Public Schools provides students with a rich blend of academic, athletic and artistic experiences. It is our tireless mission to provide experiences for our students preparing them for a future they will own.”
