For young families, Greenville, SC, checks all the boxes. When weighing everything from practicalities to arts and entertainment amenities, few cities can measure up to what Greenville has to offer: a midsize population (548,000 for Greenville County) and an affordable cost of living coupled with easy commute times, a vibrant downtown scene, and career and education opportunities for the whole family.

Well-Schooled

With more than 100 schools – including several centers that offer special focuses in technology, science and fine arts – the Greenville County School District is the largest public school system in the state. Additionally, the city offers numerous private schools that emphasize academic excellence and a nurturing environment. The region is also home to several higher education institutions, including Clemson University, Furman University, University of South Carolina Upstate and Greenville Technical College.

“The educational opportunities here are super solid. I was surprised, just driving down the interstate, how many different universities are in the area.”

Garrett Stern, Executive Director of Leadership and Professional Education, Furman University

Impressive Stats

The cost of living in Greenville is another major draw for young families. South Carolina’s sales tax rate is 6%, which is lower than the national average, allowing families to stretch their budgets further, and the state income tax top rate is 7%. Additionally, the average home value in Greenville County is $289,000 (Zillow, June 2023), about 85% of the national average, making homeownership more attainable for young families.

Safety is naturally a top concern, and Greenville takes it seriously. The city has experienced a nearly 20% decline in already low violent crime rates over the past three years, thanks to city officials who support law enforcement and work alongside neighborhoods to make Greenville a good place to live for all.

Ease of maneuverability should also be considered, especially when carting a young family around town. Commute times are reasonable, with very little traffic to speak of. Plus, there are multiple nearby towns and cities that are readily accessible.

“I always tell people Greenville is like a wagon wheel: You’ve got downtown Greenville and then 10 minutes in any direction are all these nearby communities like Mauldin, Travelers Rest and Simpsonville – it’s fantastic,” says John Harkes, coach of the Greenville Triumph soccer team.

A Growing Community

Greenville is growing – and it’s easy to see why. Many folks with young families crave a sense of community that you’d find in a small town, but they don’t want to sacrifice big-city amenities. Luckily, Greenville offers both.

“I’ve lived in both small towns and big cities, and I think Greenville is the perfect combo of the two,” Stern says.

City leaders and residents alike work together to keep Greenville moving forward as it continues to grow.

“Greenville is a city that has small-town appeal with a diverse demographic,” says Eboni Martez, chief operating officer of Academics at Prisma Health. “It’s a city with beautiful infrastructure, rich history, and community leaders that are intentional about sustainability and smart growth.”

Abundant Recreation Options

Recreation is a key factor for families seeking a wholesome and enjoyable lifestyle, and Greenville delivers on that front, as well. The city hosts a plethora of family-friendly events throughout the year, including festivals, sports games and art fairs, to name a few. Families can soar at Flying Rabbit Adventures, an aerial adventure park, or take in the breathtaking views at Falls Park on the Reedy, a stunning oasis nestled in the heart of downtown.

Speaking of outdoor recreation, Greenville offers ample opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors. The city boasts a network of beautiful parks and green spaces, perfect for family picnics and playdates. Several parks offer inclusive play equipment, including Unity Park, which opened in 2022. There’s also the Swamp Rabbit Trail, a 22-mile multiuse trail, that provides a scenic route for walking, running or cycling.

Greenville’s location in the Upstate also makes it ideal for day-trip adventures in neighboring areas throughout the year.

“Greenville is family friendly, offers four beautiful seasons, and is close to the mountains and the beach,” Martez says. “I’m thrilled my family and I can call it home.”
