Soccer in Greenville, SC: How “The Beautiful Game” Is Taking Center Stage
Call it football if you like. Or just plain soccer, as most Americans know it. For fans, it’s beloved as “the beautiful game,” and in Greenville it’s king.
As the world turned its attention to the FIFA World Cup last summer, with teams from nearly 50 nations competing for the sport’s global championship, Greenville celebrated its place as one of the country’s most vibrant soccer cities, home to a USL League One men’s team, the Greenville Triumph SC, and a pre-professional women’s team, the Greenville Liberty SC.
But soccer in Greenville is about more than just professional glory. Here, you can play organized soccer from the time you’re 3. And you’ll likely still be cheering on your team when you’re 103.
Taking Center Stage
Greenville is widely known for its youth teams, from high school state champs to highly competitive club leagues for elite players. The city has a well-earned reputation for nurturing future stars and big enthusiasm for the game. Soccer is a part of the city’s culture, an experience that connects people – in Greenville and around the world.
“Greenville is an international community, with almost 600 international companies and a large amount of international investment,” says Zach Prince, general manager and sporting director of the Greenville Triumph SC and Greenville Liberty SC.“ It combines a strong youth soccer foundation with a community that embraces growth, diversity and new experiences. The Upstate continues to attract families and young professionals, and soccer has become a sport that brings many of those people together.”
The two teams are owned by the Greenville Pro Soccer ownership group, comprising six local business executives. The Triumph’s popularity was boosted in 2024 by the announcement that Ronaldinho, the legendary player, was joining the ownership group, lending added sheen to the club’s reputation. (He went on to score big for Brazil in the World Cup).
A World-Class Experience
Elevating the soccer experience for local fans, in March 2026, Greenville welcomed the opening of GE Vernova Park, a well-designed, fan-friendly arena that seats 4,300 people and is next to the popular BridgeWay Station. It celebrated its sold-out first game in June with jet flyovers and fireworks and has since hosted World Cup watch parties and more as part of an intentional outreach to the Greenville community.
The clubs offer clinics for youth players, giving them a sought-after chance to receive training from professional players and coaches as well as one-on-one time to get to know them. They participate in school visits, partner with local organizations and engage in community events. Additionally, they collaborate with the Carolina Elite Soccer Academy and the USL Academy to develop talented players aiming for professional careers – perhaps one day playing for Greenville’s own teams.
Goal Getters
“We want young people to see soccer as something that is accessible to them and to experience the confidence, teamwork and sense of belonging that the game can provide. Soccer is our vehicle to do that,” Prince says. “At the same time, we focus on creating memorable experiences for fans and families. Building those relationships throughout the community helps foster the loyalty and support that have become such an important part of our club.”
That kind of connection is what draws many to Greenville’s huge group of fans who, when they’re not cheering on the local teams, are wearing team shirts and gathering to watch games from around the world in local bars and living rooms.
Football Fanatix of Greenville works tirelessly to build that momentum for the sport locally, spurring the formation of supporters’ clubs for local teams and distant idols such as the English Premier League’s Liverpool FC, which claims 450 local devotees. And, in true football style, the group has built a Pub Network of venues that host the games, especially welcoming sometimes-raucous World Cup fans.
