Several things set Nisus Corporation in Blount County, TN, apart from other manufacturers of products for pest control companies, industrial wood protection and agricultural micronutrients.

Topping that list is the fact that its products are formulated with a concern for the environment.

“One of our core goals is to make products that not only perform better than existing products but also have a superior environmental profile,” says Lee Barrett, president of Nisus.

Founded in 1990, the Rockford-based Nisus Corp. was born when the founder discovered that his first product, a wood preservative for log homes called Bora-Care, was also keeping termites at bay.

“Our flagship product has been used to protect over 2 million new homes from termites,” Barrett points out. “With Bora-Care, pest companies apply our product to vulnerable structural wood during construction, and that barrier protects the  home. The product remains in the wood, providing long-term residual protection from termites, other wood-destroying insects and wood rot.”

The active ingredient is a mineral salt that contains boron that disrupts the insects’ metabolism through a mode of action that is unique to insects. Other species like mammals, birds, fish, reptiles and amphibians are not affected.

Nisus Corp. Is a Leader in Green Pest Management

Another groundbreaking Nisus product is Niban, a granular bait that targets ants and cockroaches but doesn’t impact beneficial pollinators such as bees and butterflies.

Nisus Corp. is now a leader in Green Pest Management products and is revolutionizing the wood pressure treatment chemical industry.

On the wood preservative side, QNAP Copper Naphthenate, which replaces traditional chemicals to extend the life of railroad ties and utility poles, is one of the fastest-growing industrial wood preservatives in the industry.

Nisus is a member of the American Chemistry Council and participates in its Responsible Care program, a third-party auditing system that sets standards that exceed government requirements.

This environmental emphasis, for example, has led Nisus to reclaim and reuse wash water from the QNAP manufacturing process.

“We are constantly trying to improve our Environmental, Health, Safety and Security (EHS&S) profile,” Barrett adds.

Nisus Corp. Employees Make a Difference

While Nisus has experienced rapid growth, the company never loses sight of its 70 employees and their desire to make a difference in the community.

Four times a year, the charity committee gathers recommendations for causes to support financially.

“We do that so everyone in the company will feel like we can help the charities near and dear to them and their families,” Barrett says.

Fueled by their personal passions, Nisus Corp. employees organize food, clothing and school supply drives; participate in Salvation Army programs; and help Shop with a Cop, a Blount County Police Department initiative that gives Christmas presents to local kids in need.

Other causes include Wounded Warriors, several local animal adoption agencies and an organization that provides housing for veterans. Recently, Nisus donated funds to a commercial kitchen space that helps individuals launch their own businesses.

“What matters to employees matters to Nisus,” Barrett says.

“I love it when our team enjoys coming to work and when they feel empowered to improve any aspect of the business,” Barrett states. “At the end of the day, it is about relationships. If you want people to care about the company, they have to know you care about them. With that foundation, you can achieve the synergy that can makes a company great.”
