Cheers to Entrepreneurs: Businesses Find Success in Rutherford County

Innovation and entrepreneurship are flourishing in Rutherford County, thanks to robust resources, a growing population, a thriving economy and a supportive community. This vibrant environment provides fertile ground for new ventures. Here’s how two locals are building their businesses and finding early success. 

Lisa Davis, Hemispheres Wine Bar 

Lisa Davis is no stranger to changing careers. After a 30-plus-year career as a dental assistant, and now manager of a cheerleading gym, “What’s next?” is a familiar question. Most recently, the answer is: Open a wine bar! 

Hemispheres Wine Bar was born when Davis and three friends – all well-versed in wine and travel – discussed something new to bring to the area. They all frequented wine auctions in Nashville and decided it was time to bring the world of wine to Murfreesboro. When the perfect location on the Square became available, Davis and her team acted quickly; Hemispheres Wine Bar opened in November 2024. 

True to its name, Hemispheres features wines from all over the world, highlighting one region per quarter. They started with the Northwest, featuring approachable yet tasty wines from California, Washington and Oregon. Guests can select one of five pre-set wine flights or order by the glass or bottle. Beyond its impressive wine offerings, Hemispheres’ menu also offers beer, cocktails and nonalcoholic options. 

Though her career has taken different paths, Davis brings extensive management experience and a people-first approach to her business. She emphasizes the importance of doing your homework – from legalities and licensing, to learning foot traffic patterns and staffing needs. 

“There’s no checklist for what to do or what to expect,” she says. “It’s like building a plane while flying it.” 

Since its opening, Hemispheres has become a Murfreesboro staple, with repeat visitors quickly becoming regulars. The location just off the Square makes it easy for guests to walk to the bar and return later in the evening. Hemispheres has firmly established itself as a go-to spot for date nights, celebrations, special occasions or simply enjoying a new-to-you glass of wine. 

“It’s not easy, but the reward at the end is,” Davis says.

Michael Murray, Candy Cloud 

Army veteran and investment banker Michael Murray had long aspired to own a business. After relocating to Rutherford County with his family, he kept his eyes open for the right opportunity. His research ultimately led him to Candy Cloud, a specialty beverage company known for its unique coffees, teas, lemonades, milkshakes and boba drinks. 

“There was nothing like it in the area,” Murray says. “It can be hard to differentiate yourself, and Candy Cloud stands out.” 

After learning another person wanted to open a franchise, they agreed to partner. Murray and his partner opened Candy Cloud in Smyrna in November 2024. Locals quickly made this new beverage spot a favorite, drawn to unique offerings like strawberry lemonade with popping boba, housemade horchata, flavored iced teas and a “build-your-own-milkshake” option.

Murray’s military experience and finance background prepared him for entrepreneurship in surprising ways. He was well prepared to lead and motivate his team, face adversity with grace and identify meaningful trends and patterns in his business. 

“Entrepreneurship forces you into uncomfortable situations, and you’ve just got to put your head down and keep going,” he says. 

Establishing processes early on has been key for Murray and his team. The systems they build now will support growth and smooth the path for future expansions. Another essential factor in running a successful business is fostering a strong, motivated team and managing them effectively through operational challenges. Once trust is built, employees naturally strive to do their best, creating a positive work environment. He takes pride in the fact that many of his employees consider Candy Cloud their favorite job. 

Entrepreneurship, of course, comes with its challenges – growing pains, operational hurdles and inventory management among them – but for Murray, it’s the fulfillment of a dream. Candy Cloud provides him and his wife the opportunity to secure their family’s future. 

“I truly love going into the store every day,” Murray says.
