Colleges and Universities in Tyler: Partners in Progress

When higher education institutions and local communities collaborate, they create a mutually beneficial environment that fosters innovation, economic growth and cultural enrichment. This region is no exception, with three top-tier colleges and universities in Tyler, TX, working to enhance the region’s quality of life, strengthen cultural ties and keep a steady pipeline of talent flowing to local industries. 

Hard at Work 

The colleges and universities in Tyler play a fundamental role in the region’s workforce and economic development efforts. 

Tyler Junior College (TJC) provides an accessible and affordable education through an open enrollment process, dual enrollment opportunities with local high schools, continuing and adult education programs, career-focused training and customized training for businesses. 

“As a community college, our mission is to first and foremost serve the community,” says Kimberly Lessner, vice president for operations and COO at TJC. “We are also a workforce development tool for the business community. We collaborate with businesses, government agencies and even the chamber of commerce to make sure that we’re offering the right workforce training programs to meet those growing workforce demands.” 

Like TJC, the University of Texas at Tyler (UT Tyler) also plays a major role in keeping a pipeline of talent flowing to the region’s health care sector. A new University of Texas affiliated medical school – the first in the region – helps address the growing health care needs of the community. 

“Our undergraduate and graduate degrees are aligned with the workforce needs of East Texas and beyond. The university listens to the needs of our community and industry leaders to understand what skills and degrees are necessary for their workforce,” says Julie Philley, UT Tyler president. 

Texas College, a historically Black college in Tyler, contributes to the region’s workforce diversity and development efforts with strong programs in education, business and social sciences. 

“While the college does boast a geographically diverse student population, with hometowns from around the world, many students often stay within the Tyler and East Texas area after graduation, due to the aforementioned pathways and opportunities within the region,” says Jake Martin, chief marketing and communications officer at Texas College.

Cultural Impacts 

Beyond academics, TJC brightens the community’s cultural landscape. The annual TJC Arts Fest showcases student and faculty talent in visual arts, theater and music, inviting the public to celebrate creativity on campus. 

The college is home to an art museum, a planetarium and the Rogers Palmer Performing Arts Center, which regularly hosts events and shows open to the community, including regular collaborations with the East Texas Symphony Orchestra. 

“The annual Nutcracker show sells out every time, no matter how many performances are added,” Lessner says. 

The UT Tyler Cowan Center allows the community to experience world-renowned performances and speakers. The university is home to the East Texas Symphony Orchestra and the Texas Rose Festival’s coronation ceremonies. 

Adding to the festival’s vibrant atmosphere, the Texas College Band joins the Texas Rose Festival, a highlight in their calendar of community performances. 

“The college’s music ensembles are staples within the region and beyond. Evidenced by their countless performances for and partnership with the City of Tyler, as well as other local civic organizations, the choir and band provide an unmatched culture of music and performance for the region,” Martin says. 

Team Spirit 

Athletics is yet another amenity uniting the colleges and the community. Residents and visitors alike can cheer on the TJC Apaches in a number of sports, ranging from football to men’s and women’s basketball, softball, volleyball and golf. 

Texas College offers 10 NAIA Division I intercollegiate athletics for men and women and even boasts the 2024 AFCA NAIA Region 5 Coach of the Year. 

UT Tyler gives residents plenty to cheer for, too. 

“The UT Tyler Patriots athletics program has been tremendously successful in NCAA Division III and now Division II,” Philley says. “Just last year, our softball team won the NCAA DII title. We share these achievements with the community that supports us. I always encourage our community to come out to one of our games because it’s such an exciting atmosphere. Also, when our student-athletes compete in different cities and states, they not only represent UT Tyler, but they also bring attention to the city of Tyler and East Texas.”
