The Tyler Independent School District’s commitment to the arts fosters both the cognitive and creative growth of students, setting them up for success in and out of the classroom. Here’s a closer look at the offerings for music education in Tyler.

Music Education in Tyler Spans All Grade Levels

Tyler ISD offers music education opportunities at all grade levels and employs music specialists at every campus in the district. The district is also home to Caldwell Arts Academy, the premier school for the arts in East Texas. 

“We offer music classes at all our elementary campuses and an elementary district honor choir. At the secondary level, we have band, choir and orchestra classes at every campus, and each campus offers a variety of ensemble options for each discipline,” says Jennifer Hines, chief communications officer for Tyler ISD. “Our award-winning high school bands, choirs and orchestras are consistently successful and provide performance opportunities and high-level music experiences for their students.” 

Many of the district’s music students also participate in the East Texas Youth Orchestra, which offers opportunities for growth beyond the classroom setting. While in the program, students meet and collaborate with other musicians from around East Texas, achieve a higher level of performance and gain greater exposure to a varied repertoire and a broader range of musical genres and styles. 

Music Is Great for Social Growth

“In Texas, music is considered co-curricular rather than extracurricular because of how important it is for a kid’s education,” says Phil Ketcham, a middle school band director and executive director of the East Texas Youth Orchestra. “We really push the social growth side of music. There are very few activities that you can do that enhance the sense of community among kids. It also changes the way they learn. It literally rewires the brain and makes them able to learn better.” 

Hines points to the studied link between participation in music education and improved academic performance, cognitive skill development and creative capacity. She says student musicians also tend to develop deeper communication and collaboration skills, have a good grasp of time management and learn self-discipline. 

“As students enter college and careers, there is an increased need for transferable skills such as effective communication, collaboration, creativity, innovative problem-solving and self-discipline,” Hines says. “Our music programs offer students the opportunity to practice all of these skills on a consistent basis and develop skills that they will carry with them into college and careers.”
