For many, living near the water appears out of reach. In Muskegon County, though, residents enjoy miles of pristine beaches, plenty of walkable neighborhoods and abundant outdoor recreation at a price that makes lakeside living possible.

Realtor Stephanie Dahlquist of Five Star Real Estate credits the area’s appeal to the lifestyle it offers.

“We have so much walkability here, whether downtown or near state parks,” she says. “Muskegon attracts new employers and investment, but the community feel remains. It’s a small-town atmosphere without the big-city hustle.”

Neighborhoods for Every Style

Muskegon County’s housing market offers options for every budget, life stage and preference, from established waterfront neighborhoods to quieter residential areas with room to spread out.

The Lakeside neighborhood draws residents seeking proximity to restaurants, parks, boutiques and waterfront recreation. North Muskegon, Laketon Township and Norton Shores offer a different appeal – boasting tree-lined streets, larger lots and neighborhoods that feel tucked away while keeping residents close to daily conveniences.

This unique blend of rustic charm and modern accessibility creates an incredibly welcoming environment for growing families and retirees.

“There’s something for everyone here,” Dahlquist says. “You can live close to restaurants and shops or find something more private.”

Lisa Gatti-Arnold relocated to Muskegon County in 2024. After living in Maine for several years, GattiArnold returned to Michigan hoping to be closer to family, eventually finding a home in Norton Shores. “I heard a lot about Muskegon, and once I got here, I realized the energy and growth people talked about were real,” she says.

Beyond the housing market itself, Gatti-Arnold says the strong sense of community helped her feel welcomed almost immediately.

“People wave, stop to talk and look out for each other; it really feels like a neighborhood,” she says.

Access Minus Premium Prices

Muskegon County’s housing market is closely tied to its access to the water. From Lake Michigan to inland lakes and rivers, the area includes a mix of cottages, year-round homes and waterfront properties that appeal to a variety of buyers.

“One of the best things about Muskegon is the water access,” Dahlquist says. “A few lakes connect to Lake Michigan, which is a huge draw for boaters, but there are also quieter inland lakes and river properties.”

Some waterfront properties are short-term rentals, especially in Beachwood-Bluffton and Lakeside, while others are year-round homes passed down through generations.

“Waterfront properties range from modest homes to luxury estates,” Dahlquist says.

That access to the water quickly became one of Gatti-Arnold’s favorite parts of living in Muskegon County.

“We make it to the beach at least once a week,” she says. “Even in the summer, it never feels overwhelmingly crowded. That connection to the water is a big part of why we’re here.”

Affordability Meets Quality of Life

With average home values still in the mid-$200,000s, Muskegon County continues to offer a more affordable entry point than many nearby lakefront communities. Buyers can still find access to beaches, outdoor recreation, local dining and growing amenities without the higher price tags often associated with waterfront living.

“The quality of life here is really incredible,” Dahlquist says.

Newcomers relocating from higher-cost regions often notice the difference immediately.

“I knew it would be less expensive here, but I forgot how much less,” Gatti-Arnold says. “Housing costs, property taxes and daily expenses are lower.”

That affordability creates opportunities for a different kind of lifestyle.

“We’re able to save more money, spend time with family and still enjoy everything the area offers,” Gatti-Arnold says.
