The Washington County club scene is always in full swing, with a number of fine golf courses. Here is some background on four of them – two public and two private:
Clear Creek Golf Club
This 18-hole municipal course in Bristol, Va. is owned by the city, and the 6,516-yard expanse was designed by Chris Chrisman and Jack Sykes. The greens are smooth and true, and several holes feature views of the mountains.
A signature hole at Clear Creek is No. 4, a tempting par-4 measuring only 331 yards. Drive the green and be rewarded with a putt for eagle, but if you miss this green that is protected with water and bunkers, you will struggle for bogey.
Greenway Creek Golf Course
The public course provides an ideal setting for golfers wanting to truly work on their game. Greenway Creek only spans 5,552 yards from the longest tees for a par of 68, and the course has been in existence since 1995. Local golf enthusiasts and course designers John Casey and Jeff Casey both still work at Greenway Creek.
The guitar-shaped signature hole is No. 4, a 205-yard par-3 that requires a tee shot over water guarding the front of green.
Glenrochie Country Club
This private club in Abingdon is nestled in the Appalachian Mountains foothills and was established in 1958. It spans 5,000 to 7,000 yards depending on tee boxes, and the course features 35 bunkers. The greens are all mostly elevated with big contour changes.
The signature hole at Glenrochie CC is No. 6, a par-4 that only measures 360 yards. However, water guards the front of the green as well as the entire left side of the fairway and green.
The Virginian Golf Club
The Virginian is as much about the scenery as the golf, with vistas that include valleys, ridges and mountains. Known architect Tom Fazio designed The Virginian and one of his highlights is Hole No. 2, a par-3, 195-yard test where golfers hit downhill to a wide but narrow green. A bunker on the left side keeps errant hooks from bouncing into a lake, while a bunker in the front right will catch anything short.
