In recent years, the City of Seven Hills has caught people’s attention for being a great place to live, thanks to its natural beauty, rich history, friendly locals, diversity, low cost of living and great jobs. While it’s gaining notoriety as an ideal place to plant roots, Lynchburg, VA, has long drawn praise for its vibrant arts scene, which includes museums, galleries, festivals and several places to enjoy live music.
Michelline Hall, chief programming officer for the Academy Center of the Arts, says the arts are a fundamental part of Lynchburg’s cultural identity.
“That can be traced back to the late 1800s and early 1900s, with spaces like the Academy of Music, which first opened in 1905 as a performance venue for traveling artists,” Hall says. “There was also the Ellington, which was a popular jazz venue that opened in the 1900s and has since closed. I love seeing how things have developed over time but also continue to really carry that same torch of passion for live music and entertainment and the arts here.”
When it comes to live music, Patrick Earl, executive director of Endstation Theatre Co., says the city really punches above its weight. In addition to an abundance of great local bands and artists, “there’s something going on every single weekend and sometimes into the week,” Earl says. “The sky is the limit when it comes to live music.”

Music Venues
The Music Hall/Academy Center of the Arts
A beautifully renovated theater that hosts a variety of performances, the Academy Center of the Arts is not only an iconic Lynchburg institution, “it’s probably the biggest live venue,” Earl says. “They bring in a lot of the big regional acts and bigger national performers.”
Open since September 2024, The Music Hall is one of the newest programs that the Academy Center of the Arts hosts, Hall says. The purpose of the music hall is to support live music in downtown Lynchburg, VA. Taking place every Friday night, it’s an intimate space where the artists are prioritized and all genres are supported and celebrated.
“There’s such a range of everything from bluegrass to Christian rap to blues to indie rock,” Hall says. “I think that’s really reflective of our region and our local community.”
Wolfbane Productions
A professional outdoor and indoor professional theater company known for immersive experiences, Wolfbane produces larger genre-based musicals like The Toxic Avenger and Camp Crystal Lake. Its downtown Lynchburg location is in the old Coca Cola building, while its outdoor theater is in Appomattox.
Endstation Theatre Co.
Predominantly a performing arts theater for plays and scripts, Endstation also hosts the Jukebox Concert Series, which features tribute acts that often pay homage to classical American artists. Previous acts have included a Linda Ronstadt tribute performed by Hope Harris and a concert honoring Jerry Lee Lewis by artist Jason Cohen.

This coffee shop hosts open-mic nights that Hall says the Academy Center of the Arts has even found artists from to perform at its own First Friday events.
“Do not underestimate a good open-mic, as far as it being a place to go and connect and discover new artists and new voices,” she says.
