Many of us put a lot of effort into caring for our physical and mental health. And while those are certainly important, taking care of our financial health ranks near the top, too.

Summit Credit Union in Madison, WI, knows that strong financial wellness is crucial to overall health, too, and is here to help through its Financial Wellness for Employees  by Summit program.

“We’re going on over 15 years for this program, and it started because we really believe that the more you know and have control over, the fewer financial worries you’ll have,” says Kim Sponem, CEO and President of Summit Credit Union.

That means less stress, better health and a more stable personal life. All this, in turn, helps them be happier, more productive employees, too.”

The Financial Wellness  for Employees by Summit program is an educational benefit provided by Summit Credit Union free of charge to businesses that wish to help their employees face their finances with confidence. And employees are looking for the help – with a wellness survey showing 88% expect employers to offer resources to better their finances.

Companies offer the benefit to employees, similar to an insurance benefit or gym reimbursement, and employees can take advantage of in-person or virtual learning sessions on everything from personal finance and debt reduction to budgeting and emergency savings.

“We have more than 125 different learning sessions, and they’re all provided at zero cost to the end user,” Sponem says. “People can also sign up for one-on-one coaching with a Summit staff member.”

Currently, Sponem says 98 Wisconsin businesses offer Summit Credit Union’s program to their employees.

“That’s 117,251 employees who are working toward financial wellness,” she says. “We added 17 new businesses in 2023 alone.”

In 2014, the program won a Governor’s Financial Literacy Award, which recognizes individuals and organizations for excellence in increasing financial literacy throughout Wisconsin.

“It’s recognition that our programs work. Improve your finances, reduce  your stress and live a more fulfilled life,”  Sponem concludes.
