Oak Ridge Embraces Nuclear Renaissance
A nuclear renaissance is emerging around the country, says Gerald Boyd, chairman of the Oak Ridge Corridor Development Corp., which aims to attract and assist nuclear companies looking to expand their presence in the area. And nuclear energy in Oak Ridge is well positioned for a bright future. “East Tennessee and the Oak Ridge Corridor have a leg up because of the knowledge, history and capabilities that exist here and have existed here for decades,” Boyd says.
With the Y-12 National Security Complex and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) as its anchors, the Oak Ridge region is experiencing a surge in nuclear energy investment, workforce development and next-generation technology.
ORNL is a cornerstone of the region’s nuclear growth, serving as a hub for cutting-edge research and development. Its expertise in nuclear materials, reactor technology and advanced manufacturing attracts investment, drives technological advancements and creates high-skilled jobs. The lab’s research supports the development of next-generation nuclear reactors and fuel, solidifying Oak Ridge’s position as a leader in nuclear energy.
“Oak Ridge National Laboratory has a rich history of being on the forefront of nuclear energy research and development, from the Manhattan Project to the present, fueling America’s innovative leadership, energy independence, global competitiveness and national security,” says ORNL Director Stephen Streiffer.
“As we continue to push the boundaries of what’s possible in nuclear, it’s not surprising to see the surge of nuclear-related businesses moving into the region to benefit from proximity to a robust scientific knowledge base, world-class user facilities based at ORNL and nearby programs to educate the future nuclear workforce.”

Nuclear Energy in Oak Ridge: A Catalyst for Growth
The Nuclear Energy Fund, spearheaded by state leaders, has played a significant role in attracting investment and fostering nuclear advancements in Oak Ridge. The fund provides financial incentives and resources to companies developing advanced nuclear technologies.
Capitalizing on Oak Ridge’s established nuclear infrastructure and expertise, the fund creates high-paying jobs and solidifies the region’s position as a national leader in nuclear energy.
The success of it is clear. In September 2024, France-based Orano selected Oak Ridge for the site of a new multibillion dollar uranium enrichment facility, representing the single-largest capital investment in Tennessee’s history.
Kairos Power is investing more than $100 million in Oak Ridge to develop its Hermes 5 demonstration reactor, a molten salt reactor designed for enhanced safety and efficiency. X-energy is focused on developing advanced nuclear reactors and TRISO (tristructural isotropic) fuel. Further, BWXT announced that it purchased nearly 100 acres in Oak Ridge to establish a centrifuge assembly manufacturing facility.
“These investments create jobs, both directly and indirectly,” Boyd says. “There is a huge supply chain that will come to the region to support the nuclear industry, and that will create even more jobs.”
Roane State Preparing Workforce of the Future
Recognizing the importance of a skilled workforce, the region is investing heavily in education and training. Roane State Community College’s Nuclear Technology Program offers associate degrees and certifications, creating a pipeline for skilled technicians. The Nuclear Technology Program offers students hands-on training and education across the nuclear fuel cycle. It aims to equip individuals with the skills necessary for roles in fuel manufacturing, reactor operations and decommissioning.
With support from industry leaders, the program ensures students gain practical experience with relevant equipment.
“The demand for nuclear talent is skyrocketing,” says Dr. Chris Whaley, president of Roane State. “Our program ensures students are ready for high-paying careers in this evolving field.”
The Oak Ridge Enhanced Technology and Training Center provides specialized training and education, focusing on the practical skills needed to support advanced nuclear technologies. The center collaborates with industry partners to offer hands-on experience, bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world application. Its programs are designed to upskill existing workers and prepare new entrants for careers in areas like advanced manufacturing, nuclear operations and related technical fields.
Boyd says education and workforce training programs at Roane State, Tennessee Tech and Oak Ridge Associated Universities are crucial to support the nuclear renaissance in the region, along with land availability and incentives.
“That’s what the Oak Ridge Corridor Development Corp. is all about,” he says. “We put all those pieces of the puzzle together to make sure the needs of the nuclear industry are met so that our region can grow.”
Oak Ridge: Where Science Meets Business
Oak Ridge leverages its nuclear legacy for dynamic events. Nuclear Science Week in October offers hands-on activities, expert discussions and lab tours highlighting nuclear innovation in clean energy, medicine and national security from Y-12 and Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The Federal Opportunities Procurement Fair, hosted by the Oak Ridge Chamber, connects local businesses with contracting opportunities in the region’s $2 billion+ federal marketplace.
