Ames, Iowa: Free Job Training in a College Town

Ames has all the amenities of a college town, plus plenty of charm and chances to get outside. It’s a great place to live – and to train in something new through the Story County Retraining Program.

What the Story County Retraining Program Offers

The program is a collaboration between the Ames Regional Economic Alliance, Story County and Des Moines Area Community College. It removes the financial barriers that often come with a career pivot.

Participants get free job training in high-demand fields like CNA, CDL, welding, IT help desk and even niches like dog grooming. These fast-track training programs last between 5 and 15 weeks.

The program also provides wraparound support as needed, so students can focus on their studies.

“I’m constantly thinking every single day of how are we keeping our talent here?” says Shannon Thiele, Vice President of Affiliate Programming at the Ames Regional Economic Alliance. “I don’t want them moving to larger cities… Providing those opportunities and that career exposure is really what we’re trying to do.”

San Joaquin County, California: Adult Education That Bridges the Gap

San Joaquin County is a lively inland port area. It has a variety of exciting venues and miles of waterways for boating and kayaking. Its cost of living is also much lower than the nearby Bay Area.

Fast-Track Training for Adult Learners

For adults looking to pivot, the San Joaquin Adult Education Consortium partners with San Joaquin Delta College and local adult schools to offer fast-track training in high-demand sectors. Options include healthcare, cybersecurity and dental assisting.

“We focus on helping learners complete foundational education… and then connect them directly to college, career training or the workforce,” says Heather Maloy, Dean of Adult Education at San Joaquin Delta College.

“By coordinating resources across institutions, the consortium makes it easier for adult learners to transition into… employment opportunities that match their personal and professional goals.”

Support for Learners From 18 to 70

The approach emphasizes adaptability and support for students ages 18 to 70. Offerings include GED preparation, English as a Second Language courses and digital literacy training. Students also get college and career counseling, including financial aid guidance if needed.

“We want to give them the best possible platform and launchpad to secure employment and go after whatever their career aspirations may be,” says Tim Hurles, Principal of Lodi Adult School.

Sarasota, Florida: Quick Credentials by the Beach

Beaches, year-round warmth, arts and culture… sold yet? Beyond the fun in the sun and a solid community, the Sarasota Chamber’s Bridges to Careers program can move you toward a new career.

How Bridges to Careers Works

Bridges to Careers focuses on quick credentials that move participants into the workforce in as little as 6 to 12 weeks. It targets industries with a significant skills gap, especially healthcare, manufacturing and skilled trades like HVAC and plumbing.

Personalized support helps students land jobs.

“The goal is just that – that we get them ready for employment… connecting them with local employers and really trying to expedite the whole process because there’s such a need for these specific roles in our community,” says Kevin Golumbeck, Director of CareerEdge at the Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce.

A Magnet for Career Changers

The program isn’t just for people looking for their first job. It’s a magnet for career changers.

“We’ve seen every kind of archetype, from young people entering the labor market, you’ve got unemployed or underemployed, [to] career changers… I love that we tap into so many different people that it really is a rich and diverse group every time,” Golumbeck says.

Ready to Make Your Move?

These programs prove that a career change doesn’t have to be a multi-year, debt-inducing ordeal. With the right support and a community invested in your success, you can reinvent your professional life fast.
