#39. Beaverton, OR

Perhaps best known for being the world headquarters of famed shoe brand Nike, Beaverton, OR is a western Portland suburb with tons of personality and perks. The community is part of the so-called Silicon Forest, thanks to a number of high-tech companies, and has top-notch schools, a beautiful city library and a new arts center in the works. For families and active residents, Beaverton has tons of parks, trails and open spaces to get some exercise and some fresh air. Plus, it’s quick and easy to get to Portland from Beaverton, thanks to a robust regional transportation system.

Top Industries & Employers: Nike, IBM, Reser’s Fine Foods and Tektronix are some of the largest employers.

Weekend Plans: Grab your morning coffee at Ava Roasteria, then stroll through the Beaverton Farmers Market. In the afternoon, head to one of Beaverton’s local wineries like Cooper Mountain Vineyards or Hamacher Wines.

Favorite Place to Feast: Boriken Restaurant, which dishes up traditional Puerto Rican cuisine. Locals love the pernil, which is tender, oven-roasted pork that melts in the mouth.

Beloved Beverage: The hundreds of bourbons and whiskies at The Westgate Bourbon Bar and Taphouse, which also doubles as a bottle shop.

Outdoorsy Activity: Bird watching at Lowami Hart Woods Natural Area and Hyland Forest Park, two peaceful wilderness retreats right in the heart of town.

Why Your Pet Will Love It, Too: There are tons of friendly doggy daycares in Beaverton, including BarkZone, Buster & Lilly’s, Noah’s Arf, Barklandia, Pup-A-Razzi and Sniff Dog Hotel, just to name a few.

Remote Work Perk: Need a midday break during all those Zoom calls? In Beaverton, you can get to an array of parks and open spaces in less than 20 minutes, take a quick hike, then be back in your home office feeling refreshed and recharged. Cooper Mountain Nature Park and Tualatin Hills Nature Park are two local favorites.

One More Thing … Beaverton is home to one of the state’s only dedicated curling ice rinks, managed by the Evergreen Curling Club. The site hosted the senior women’s curling national championship in 2017.
