UPDATE: Check out our new 2023 Best Cities to Live in the U.S. list.

#6. Savannah – Affordable Cities 2018

Savannah may be bursting with Southern charm, but that doesn’t mean it’ll bust your bank account. Savannah’s residents spend more than 30% less across the board on necessities, with the biggest savings on healthcare and entertainment. And for a city so closely associated with large, expensive homes, the median home price is fortunately not aligned with this stereotype: the national median home price is more than $50,000 above Savannah’s.

These Are Savannah’s Top Employers

As to why Savannah is highly livable, perhaps it’s better to ask what it doesn’t have to offer. For example, Savannah is home to state-of-the-art research hospitals, including Memorial University Medical Center and St. Joseph’s Hospital, which both recently tied for 7th on the U.S. News and World Report ranking of Best Hospitals in Georgia.

Of course, Savannah is also jam-packed with history and culture — we didn’t include it on our list of the 10 Best Cities for Historic Preservation for no reason, after all. In fact, Savannah boasts the largest National Historic District of its kind in the entire country. The district includes the gorgeous 30-acre Forsyth Park, City Market and cobblestone streets. And with average January temperatures of 49.5 degrees, these treasures can be enjoyed year-round.

How to Spend a Weekend in Savannah

Come springtime, the Savannah Music Festival is certain to impress as well — it lasts 17 days and features more than 100 productions ranging from live music to film and dance.
