California’s Newest City

Located in San Joaquin County, Mountain House is California’s newest city. In the summer of 2024, Mountain House officially became California’s 483rd city – the state’s first new city in 10 years. Its incorporation has been decades in the making. 

City planning started in 1991, then development began in 2001, but thanks to the 2008 recession, progress slowed significantly. Finally, after weathering the economic storm, Mountain House has bounced back, with new homes being built left and right, selling for prices from $700,000 to $1 million. 

San Joaquin County Accolades

San Joaquin County is garnering other accolades, too. Lathrop is the fifth-fastest growing city in the nation and second in the state. Thanks to the River Islands community, which encompasses over 15,000 new home builds, it’s no wonder Lathrop is ranking so high on this national statistic. 

As of 2023, the city’s population was 35,000 and counting. Additionally, nearby Stockton ranked No. 14 on U.S. News & World Report’s list of Best Places to Live in California. A more established city with a population of 320,000, Stockton is culturally diverse, full of excellent entertainment and retail offerings, plus it’s home to multiple parks and natural outdoor attractions. 

Stockton Metropolitan Airport

Stockton Metropolitan Airport Expansion

Stockton Metropolitan Airport (SCK) is undergoing a $26 million expansion. That’s right, the airport is getting a massive facelift. The bulk of the funds will go toward terminal investments, like baggage claim, TSA security, rental car counters and restrooms. Another chunk of the budget will go toward restoring and redesigning the West Ramp. Funds have also been allocated to construct and acquire new hangars, build a pilot center and self-serve fueling facility, as well as an air traffic control tower study. Seeing as the existing building is over 60 years old and designed to accommodate much smaller planes, it’s a project that has been highly anticipated. All in all, the project is going to be a huge transformation that will benefit residents for decades to come. 

New Pickleball and Padel Complex

The first pickleball and padel complex on a U.S. college campus is now at the University of the Pacific in Stockton. The result of a partnership between the university and San Diego company Taktika Padel, this impressive outdoor complex features eight pickleball courts and four padel courts, which are open to the public. 

The development is a sign of the ever-growing popularity of both pickleball and padel. While pickleball has picked up speed in the U.S., padel is expanding globally – so Stockton is well ahead of the curve in that regard. In fact, the complex hosted a key tournament for the 2024 Chosen Foods USPA Circuit in September. The courts are open Monday through Sunday in the morning and at night.
