The Okaloosa County School District in Okaloosa County, Fl, provides education and training to students, preparing them for future employment and contributing to the overall economic growth of the community.

The district collaborates with local businesses, industries, community organizations and higher education institutions to establish partnerships that enhance workforce development.

For example, the district partners with Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University to offer the university’s Gaetz Aerospace Institute, a dual enrollment program for high school students.

“Communication between industry and education is critical for the success of our students. Secondary education aims to prepare our students to be successful with the best opportunities available in our community. The Embry-Riddle program opens the conversation with industry while working with the university and secondary schools to ensure those needs are met,” says Catherine Card, public information officer for the Okaloosa County School District.

Card says that while Florida is known for its public aerospace facilities, such as Kennedy Space Center, Cecil Spaceport and Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, there is also an increasing demand for workers within aviation’s private sector.

“More commercial pilots are retiring than young pilots are entering the workforce. The need for aviation mechanics, pilots, air traffic controllers and engineers will continue to rise. The training and education needed for these positions is more demanding than the standard four-year degree. That’s how the Gaetz Aerospace Institute helps,” she says. “With courses offered at the middle and high school level, students are being introduced to and trained at an earlier age, allowing them to be more knowledgeable before graduating high school.”
