Marion has seen an influx of new dentists, orthodontists and oral surgeons who are choosing to base their practices in Marion, giving residents more choices for dental care, closer to home.

Parks & Schmit Orthodontics is based in Cedar Rapids and has an office in Marion for providing services for straightening teeth, and Eastern Iowa Oral Surgery offers procedures ranging from dental implant surgery to wisdom tooth removal to corrective jaw surgery. Horton Family Dental cares for children of all ages as well as adults and specializes in safe and fast ways to care for patients. Restoration Dental Center has state-of-the-art facilities for performing everything from implants to pediatric checkups.

The growth of dental-related businesses mirrors the growth of the overall small company sector throughout Marion, where more and more businesses are opening to accommodate the city’s population that is approaching 40,000 residents.

“Marion’s population has grown over 40 percent since 2000, and those busy families desire that goods and services be provided in close proximity to where they live,†says Jill Ackerman, president of the Marion Chamber of Commerce. “We’ve seen more than 30 new businesses or business expansions take place in Marion in the last 12 months, so small business has a big impact on our local economy. Don’t forget that small businesses are also customers who impact the economy.â€

Services at Cedar Valley Family Dentistry include general and cosmetic dentistry, dental implants, teeth whitening and emergency dental care, and owner Kären Wilson, D.D.S. offers amenities, such as televisions in treatment rooms, spa paraffin hand dipping and stuffed animals for children to hold during treatments.

“I built my office to feel like a home and look like a home,†Wilson says. “Our patients include children from 18 months to 18 years as well as adults of all ages, and we strive to make every patient as relaxed and comfortable as possible whenever they are here.â€

Meanwhile, Marion Dental is a popular practice on Barrington Parkway.

“About 10 years ago, I bought a legacy dental practice that had been in Marion since the 1960s, then three years ago, I moved into a new modern location due to the advancements in dental technology and equipment,†says Laura Mach, D.D.S., owner of Marion Dental.

A variety of services are offered at Marion Dental, including esthetics, implant supported dentures, laser therapy for gum disease, sleep apnea therapy, teeth whitening and simple orthodontics for adults.

“I treat the dental needs of entire families, including children as young as 6 months old,†Mach says. “It used to be that residents of Marion needed to visit Cedar Rapids for their specialty dental care needs, but now we have specialists setting up shop in town, which improves accessibility.â€
