Drink & Dine Your Way Through Downtown Muskegon, MI

Downtown Muskegon, MI, is the best place in the city to go for food and drinks, especially since the 2020 introduction of the Downtown Social District. Within the common area (bounded roughly by Clay and Western avenues to the east and west, and Pine and Fourth streets to the north and south), diners can carry beer and cocktails from select establishments on the street. In addition to making great food, all the restaurants below are part of the district, and are within an easy 15-minute stroll of each other. With spots serving everything from breakfast to late-night bites, plus music and sports venues nearby, it’s easy to spend the entire day in the neighborhood. So, whether you’re craving pizza or poutine, here are nine Downtown Muskegon restaurants sure to satisfy any appetite.

794 Kitchen & Bar 

794 Kitchen & Bar marks the northern edge of the Downtown Social District. Its menu boasts bar and grill staples like wraps, burritos, burgers, sandwiches, a smattering of salads and chicken in about every preparation you can imagine (fried, grilled, marinated, in tacos, in quesadillas, in strips, in flautas, etc.). Southern touches like fried alligator or catfish, étouffée and jambalaya add a regional touch to the scrumptious eats coming out of the kitchen. If you only have time to sample a few Downtown Muskegon restaurants, this one belongs at the top of the list!

NAPOTE’S ITALIAN KITCHEN

Nipote’s Italian Kitchen 

Rather than leaning into stereotypical Italian restaurant design (awning, gallery wall and overstuffed booths), Nipote’s Italian Kitchen occupies a thoroughly modern space built from sunny yellow shipping containers. The menu is as traditional as the space is contemporary, though this isn’t a pizzeria; instead, expect soups and salads, pasta (mushroom ravioli in goat cheese sauce is a favorite), and entrees like herbed salmon and bistro steak. 

Walker’s – An American Brasserie 

Located in downtown Muskegon’s Delta Hotels by Marriott, Walker’s – An American Brasserie boasts a patio abutting Western Avenue that’s the perfect spot to grab drinks and a bite before a show at the Frauenthal Center, which is just across the street. The wine list is expansive with by-the-glass selections, and a robust list of alcohol-free options makes the spot welcoming for all.

Rad Dads’ Tacos & Tequila Bar 

Relentlessly ’80s-themed joint Rad Dads’ Tacos & Tequila Bar mixes retro kitsch both in the decor and on the menu. A wall tiled in cassette tapes and bar top plastered in Teen Beat and Mad magazine covers sets the stage for a punny menu with A Fish Called Wanda mahi-mahi and Chick Norris fried chicken tacos. Agave spirit lovers will appreciate the regularly updated tequila list, which boasts nearly 50 different flavorful options. 

Legends Bar & Grille 

For casual food in a party atmosphere, you can’t get much better than Legends Bar & Grille. The spot has the comfy, companionable vibe of a place that’s been open for decades, even though it first opened its doors in 2021. Customers love the friendly service. With a tasty bar menu consisting of ultra-crunchy, ultra-juicy pressure-fried chicken and double cheeseburgers topped with everything from eggs to onion rings, it’s a sure bet for a good time. 

The Early Owl 

The Early Owl sounds like a breakfast spot – and it is, but it’s so much more. On Friday and Saturday, the eatery serves dinner in addition to all-day breakfast and lunch. Take a seat at the U-shaped bar and sip on some bird-themed cocktails (like the Lively Lark and Great Owl’d Fashion) or settle into cushy banquette seating and dig into one of the sweet or savory Dutch babies on the menu. During the pleasant summer months, don’t miss the chance to dine on the rooftop patio, known as the Flight Deck, which offers great views of downtown. The Early Owl is one of the most unique Downtown Muskegon restaurants, absolutely worthy of a reservation!

Dr. Rolf’s Barbeque 

Dr. Rolf’s Barbeque is owned by a real-life physician who clearly knows that good food can be as healing to the soul as good medicine. The wood-paneled dining room is small and rustic, but plenty of outdoor seating (an open patio in the summer, individual greenhouses in the winter) can accommodate diners ordering pulled pork, sausage, baby back ribs, smoked chicken and more. 

Carlisle’s Restaurant 

Carlisle’s Restaurant bills itself as the best sports restaurant in Muskegon – which makes sense, since it (along with Rad Dads’) is located inside the Trinity Health Arena, home to the city’s indoor soccer, football and hockey teams. But the food is far better than you’d expect to score in such a venue: Get ready to feast on gastropub staples (poutine, short rib grilled cheese and Cubano sandwiches) plus internationally influenced entrees (butter chicken, lasagna and pork belly ramen). 

Topshelf Liquor Bar & Pizza 

Near the southern edge of the Social District, Topshelf Liquor Bar & Pizza’s moniker is somehow both extremely descriptive and not descriptive enough, since this casual restaurant serves far more than liquor and pizza. With 22 taps, there’s a solid selection of craft beer (much of it from Michigan and other Midwestern breweries) and a menu that includes oven-baked subs, salads and a milelong list of fried everything appetizers in addition to its hand-tossed pies.
