Jacksonville is ranked as one of the safest cities in the state of North Carolina, and Business Week Magazine named it the best city in North Carolina to raise kids. In addition to its many accolades, this charming city is the commercial center of Onslow County and home of Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune. With a low cost of living and attractive winter climate, it’s no wonder Jacksonville has experienced tremendous growth in the last four years.

If you’re considering relocating to the area (or you just want to get a taste of what life is like in this diverse city), here are some of the best places to move nearby.

Great Weekend Getaways Near Jacksonville

The Reserve at Jacksonville Commons

This community is a short drive (or even a walk) to the best the city has to offer. You’re near some of the best retail and dining around, and just a short drive from Onslow Memorial Hospital. This area is also home to some of the highest-rated schools in the city, including Jacksonville Commons Elementary and Middle, as well as Northside High School. It’s a great location for young adults or young couples with children.

Just a short drive east down State Road 24 is Hubert, NC. This beautiful town sits on the northeast side of Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune and runs along the Intracoastal Waterway. Hubert offers a quiet, outdoorsy life, delicious seafood, and a welcoming community of people. You may consider moving here if you want to live near—but not on—the military base.

Richlands is a great location, whether you’re looking for a place to raise a family, start a business, or sail into retirement. This vibrant, family-friendly community pairs small town charm with a unique sense of history. Incorporated in 1880, Richlands was the first town in the county to elect a female mayor and have its own library and museum. And while they still boast a rich history, the town of Richlands is full of new opportunities and technologies. It’s also been an attractive location to build a home in recent years due to the high quality of life and low cost of living.

Living the Coastal Life in and Near Jacksonville

Sneads Ferry

If you like shrimp, flounder, clams, or oysters, this is definitely the community for you. Sneads Ferry is a quaint seafood village in Onslow County, just down the road from Jacksonville. Although it was once a rural village, this town has experienced a surge in development in the last 15 years, nearly doubling in size. And with its easy proximity to Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, it’s really no surprise that Sneads Ferry is predicted to keep growing, making it an excellent time to move into the community.

Located a little farther out of town, Swansboro sits along the coast and is affectionately known as the “friendly city by the sea.” It’s a quaint, historic town known for its array of antiques—and its fondness for watersports. Stay for a spell and you’re likely to spot people toting kayaks or paddleboards through town. Swansboro offers everything from shopping and dining to recreation and a host of eclectic shops. And, fun fact: It’s also the setting of the Nicholas Sparks’ novel, The Guardian, proving its status as one of the prettiest towns around.
