Ever since 1980, when Frank M. Bell Jr., William K. Davis and Walter “Wrennie” Pitt Jr. established their small law firm in Winston-Salem, NC, success has been steady and sustained.

And there’s a good reason for that.

“That growth has been organic,” says Kevin Williams, a litigator and president of Bell, Davis & Pitt. “The philosophy has always been: If you do good work for clients, they’ll talk about you and other clients will find you, which will require you to hire more people to do good work.”

“I think it’s self-fulfilling,” Williams continues. “The fact that we’ve been able to grow over the years is at least some validation that we’re doing it the right way.”

When Bell, Davis & Pitt first opened, the founders primarily handled litigation, real estate and commercial banking. The firm has since broadened its scope to handle legal matters ranging from malpractice defense to intellectual property and tax law.

Combined, about 70 employees in Winston-Salem and the newer Charlotte office bring nearly 1,200 years of legal experience to the table.

“We pride ourselves on representing clients as efficiently and effectively as possible,” says Williams, noting the firm’s practice of assigning paralegals and associates when appropriate to help clients save money.

Clara Ignich, a senior associate who focuses on family law, joined the firm in 2020.

“Before I started working here, I was aware of its reputation in the community as a very well-respected firm that offered a wide variety of legal services at a variety of price points,” she says.

“I see its role in the community as filling that midrange need. Whether you’re a small business  or a big business or an individual, we can help.”

To attract and retain “good, smart, hardworking people,” Williams points out, the firm offers competitive salaries and benefits.

“We often ‘punch above our weight.’ We find ourselves in cases and deals with some of the biggest firms in the state and pride ourselves in being able to do that in a firm that doesn’t have several hundred lawyers with a dozen different offices,” Williams says.

For Ignich, one of the  best parts about practicing law at Bell, Davis & Pitt is that the leaders truly care about their employees.

“When somebody is in crisis or celebrating a joyful event, we share it with each other,” Ignich adds. “It’s really a collegial and collaborative environment.”

The firm is also heavily invested in local causes, sponsoring the area National Public Radio station, Winston-Salem Symphony and William G. White Jr. Family YMCA Mistletoe Run, and supporting employees in their own volunteer efforts.

“We don’t mandate that our lawyers do a certain amount of community service or join certain organizations or give back in any set way,” Williams notes. “We hire people who we know are going to do that because it’s just who they are.”
