Major Health System Investments Are Expanding Care Access, Careers and Innovation in Hudson County, NJ

Hudson County is at a pivotal moment in its health care story. Two of New Jersey’s leading health systems are making transformative investments in the region – reshaping how residents receive care, where they find careers and what they can expect from their local hospitals in the years ahead. 

A Landmark Alliance 

RWJBarnabas Health (RWJBH), the state’s largest academic health system and the parent organization of Jersey City Medical Center, moved to significantly expand its regional footprint in January 2026 when it signed a definitive agreement to bring Englewood Health into its network. 

The deal, which awaits state and federal regulatory approval, would unite one of New Jersey’s most honored independent hospitals with a system that cares for more than 5 million patients annually across 14 hospitals. 

Englewood – a perennial Leapfrog Top Teaching Hospital and U.S. News & World Report Best Regional Hospital – brings more than 800 physicians across five counties into the network. Under RWJBH, its patients would gain access to the Rutgers Cancer Institute, New Jersey’s only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, along with deeper clinical resources and expanded community health programs serving Hudson, Bergen and Passaic counties. 

The agreement represents more than system growth. It signals expanded specialty access, greater clinical integration and the financial scale needed to support advanced technology and innovation close to home. 

Healing By Design 

Meanwhile, Hackensack Meridian Palisades Medical Center is making its commitment to Hudson County visible in steel and glass. A $50 million emergency department expansion – already underway and delivering results in its first phase – will double the department to 22,000 square feet and increase treatment capacity to 50 bays. 

“Hudson County is a dynamic and growing region, and we are seeing an increasing demand for emergency services,” says Lisa Iachetti, MBA, BSN, RN, president and chief hospital executive of Palisades Medical Center. 

“This expansion is a direct response to that need, ensuring we can continue to provide the high-quality, accessible and compassionate care our community expects and deserves.” 

The redesigned facility is built around the patient experience. Fifteen new fast-track bays will move nonurgent cases through more efficiently, reducing wait times. An enlarged trauma bay, a dedicated pediatric area and a secure space for behavioral health patients reflect a deliberate effort to deliver more specialized care during what Iachetti describes as “a stressful time” for patients and families. 

Innovation is embedded in the design itself. Near floor-to-ceiling windows flood the space with natural light — a feature Iachetti notes is more than aesthetic. Research has shown daylight exposure can reduce depression and, for some patients, shorten hospital stays. 

For staff, access to natural light has been linked to lower stress and greater job satisfaction. Combined with waterfront views, the design reinforces a philosophy that healing environments are part of clinical strategy. 

“We are not just building a new facility,” Iachetti says. “We are investing in the future of health care for Hudson and southern Bergen counties, positioning Palisades Medical Center to meet the evolving needs of our patients for many years to come.” 

Far-Reaching Impact 

Beyond patient care, the expansion is generating measurable economic impact. Palisades is actively recruiting registered nurses, patient care technicians, unit secretaries, radiology staff, environmental services workers and security personnel. 

Construction and trade jobs have also been created as part of the project. 

Through affiliations – including the Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine, a one-year RN residency program – and a patient care technician apprenticeship initiative, Palisades is helping build a sustainable pipeline of health care professionals trained in Hudson County for Hudson County. 

That pivotal investment aligns with a broader culture of excellence. 

The medical center recently earned the Joint Commission’s Health Care Equity Certification, Primary Stroke and Sepsis Program Certification and a U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals for Maternity Care designation for 2026.
