Community Events
Otero County, New Mexico, is home to Holloman Air Force Base and a significant number of veterans, and hosts several events to honor service members. In March, the Bataan Memorial Death March is a grueling trek at the White Sands Missile Range. In September, the Ace of Races is a series of foot races at Holloman Air Force Base. In November, Alamogordo hosts a Veterans Day Parade and Sounds of Freedom, a concert dedicated to service men and women. The Otero County Fair is one of the biggest events of the year, drawing thousands of attendees. Held in September, it features carnival rides, a rodeo, a livestock show, several pageants and indoor exhibitions – and it’s free.
Family-friendly Festivals
A rural region with just 69,000 residents, Otero County brings its communities together for holidays throughout the year. At Easter in the Park, guests can do an egg hunt, shop market vendors, dine at a food truck and enjoy kids’ activities. In July, locals celebrate the red, white and blue at a 4th of July Parade. At Zoo Boo in October, costumed kids go trick or treating, and in December, there is Christmas on MainStreet, the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony and the Christmas Parade.
Nichols Ranch and Orchard in La Luz is a popular pick-your-own destination that hosts annual events including a Cherry Festival in June and a Pumpkin Patch and Apple Festival in October. High Rolls also hosts an annual Cherry Festival in June and an Apple Festival in September.
Other noteworthy events are the White Sands Balloon Invitational in September, when dozens of hot air balloons sail over the dunes of White Sands National Park; Cloudcroft Lumberjack Day in September, celebrating all things wood chopping; Battle of the Food Trucks and Corks & Shells in October, celebrating local food culture; and the Burning of the Bull in October, where locals let go of their worries.
