If you look at the wide array of outdoor activities in Dayton and the region, it is easy to foresee four seasons worth of fun and adventure. From hiking and cycling during the spring and fall, to summertime river-paddling opportunities, to an easy day trip for snow skiing and tubing during the winter, there are numerous enticements throughout the year to get up and go outside.

Spring
Be among the wildflowers: Spring is gorgeous in the Dayton region, especially when the wildflowers are in full bloom. This colorful display can be enjoyed at many of the 18 Five Rivers MetroParks, including 189-acre Cox Arboretum (which has a pollinator garden, perennial gardens and an Edible Landscape Garden), 88-acre Wegerzyn Gardens (with a Children’s Discovery Garden) and 31-acre Aullwood Garden (donated by local conservationist Marie Aull).
Hit the trails at Charleston Falls Preserve: This is the most visited park in Miami County, with nearly 4 miles of trails cutting through 216 acres of prairie and forests. The highlight is the preserve’s namesake waterfall, which plummets 37 feet over rock strata, much like a miniature Niagara Falls.

Experience History: Visit SunWatch Village, the site of an 800-year-old Native American village, to learn about the region’s earliest inhabitants and their vibrant and fascinating culture.
Summer
Descend into the Ohio Caverns: No matter how hot it might get above ground, it is always a pleasant 54 degrees within the colorful Ohio Caverns, located approximately 50 miles northeast of Dayton in West Liberty. Regularly scheduled walking tours take visitors 100 feet deep, passing the largest stalactite in Ohio along the way.
Paddle the rivers: Numerous public access points in and around Dayton are available for the 156-mile-long Great Miami River National Water Trail, which runs from near Cincinnati to Indian Lake State Park at Russell’s Point. One of its tributaries, the 69-mile-long Stillwater River, lives up to its calm name, making it ideal for beginning paddlers.

Enjoy the county fair: The beloved tradition of annual fairs dates to the mid-1800s, and the Dayton region had one of the first, as the Great Darke County Fair in Greenville began in 1853. Many others have popped up since then, including the Montgomery County Fair in Drexel and the Butler County Fair in Hamilton.
Cool Off at Adventure Reef Water Park: Open from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, this fun-filled 3-acre outdoor facility features waterslides, a water playground, a splash pad and plenty of deck seating for parents.
Fall
Cycle along the Little Miami Scenic Trail: At 78 miles, this is the longest single trail in the more than 330-mile Miami Valley Trails network. The paved, well-shaded pathway runs just east of Dayton, through the towns of Corwin, Xenia and Springfield.
Visit a pumpkin patch: There are dozens of places throughout the Dayton region to find this orange staple of the season. Make it even better by adding in a good old-fashioned corn maze, like the one found at 8-acre Tom’s Maze and Pumpkin Farm in Germantown.
Or an apple orchard: The apple is close behind on the list of fall’s fantastic fruits, and the Dayton region has that ground covered as well. Monnin’s Fruit Farm in Dayton has been offering pick-your-own apples and other seasonal fruits since 1961. Pickers at Hidden Valley Orchards in Lebanon can relax afterward with a “croptail” at the on-site taproom.
Winter
Go skating away: There is plenty of room to try out your best skate moves at the RiverScape MetroPark ice rink, which measures 150 feet by 70 feet and is sheltered under a pavilion. Meanwhile, the Kettering Ice Arena offers opportunities for figure skating, ice hockey, leisure skating and lessons.

Hit the slopes: Granted, you have to drive a bit first, but snow skiing and tubing can be found barely an hour from downtown Dayton. Mad River Mountain in Zanesfield has 16 ski trails on 144 acres, with a vertical drop of up to 300 feet. Just across the state line in Indiana, Perfect North Slopes offers up 23 ski trails and 25 tubing lanes.
Snowshoe beaucoup: The same expansive parks and trail network that makes this area so good for hiking and biking can easily be utilized for snowshoeing. Proving that what’s good for the summer is good for the winter when it comes to outdoor recreation throughout the Dayton region.
