Healthcare providers are meeting the growing need for services in the Upstate by investing in expanded facilities and new technologies, building the current and future healthcare workforce, and keeping care close to home.

Bon Secours

“Our goal is to make accessing care as simple, convenient and seamless as possible for the communities we serve,” says Dr. Bruce Swords, chief clinical officer at Bon Secours St. Francis Medical Center. “Few health systems in South Carolina are investing simultaneously in new facilities, physician training, emergency access and outpatient services at the scale we are today.”

Its Downtown campus now includes a new Intensive Care Unit expanded to 18 beds and a new medical/surgical unit focusing on orthopedic and spine patients.

“This allows us to better ensure patients are placed in the right setting with the appropriate level of care,” says David Walsh, vice president of support services.

The system has also been steadily expanding its emergency services, building freestanding emergency departments in Simpsonville and Five Forks, with two more, in Greer and Powdersville, slated to open in 2027.

Technological advances like enhanced cardiac imaging capabilities, minimally invasive structural heart procedures, robotic-assisted surgery, and an array of virtual and remote care capabilities are improving convenience, access and continuity of care.

Investments in people take top priority, too. “We’re continuing to invest in programs that strengthen access to care for the long term, especially when it comes to building the next generation of physicians,” Swords says.

Now in the second year of its Graduate Medical Education (GME) program for internal medicine, Bon Secours St. Francis Medical Center is training resident physicians and incorporating them into its practices.

“By training physicians locally, we’re helping ensure more doctors choose to practice in the Upstate, supporting sustainable access to care for years to come,” Swords says.

Prisma Health

A cornerstone in Greenville for more than 100 years, Prisma Health Greenville Memorial Hospital serves as the region’s flagship facility. Its hubs across the Upstate include Greenville Memorial Hospital, Children’s Hospital–Upstate, Greer Memorial Hospital, Hillcrest Hospital, North Greenville Hospital, Oconee Memorial Hospital, Patewood Hospital, Baptist Easley Hospital, Roger C. Peace Rehabilitation Hospital and Laurens County Hospital.

“South Carolina is one of the fastest-growing states in the country, and Prisma Health is growing alongside it to ensure patients receive the care they need from the physicians and care teams they trust,” says Clarence Sevillian, Prisma Health executive vice president and chief operating officer.

The system invested nearly $640 million in major expansions in 2026, including $350 million to double patient capacity in Greer and a new $138 million behavioral health hospital in nearby Easley, and has strengthened access to specialized children’s care and increased mental health capacity across the region. Integrating these services into primary and specialty care improves coordination and reduces barriers for patients and families.

Prisma Health is also advancing technology and access, from expanded telehealth and digital tools to minimally invasive procedures and enhanced imaging capabilities and is growing its network of physician offices, urgent care locations and lower-cost outpatient services to make care more convenient. “Our goal is to create a seamless experience, ensuring patients can easily access high-quality care when and where they need it most,” Sevillian says.

Novant Health

Novant Health, a nationally recognized, integrated network of hospitals and healthcare services across North and South Carolina, first came to the Upstate in 2024. From opening clinics on Congaree Road – with specialties including orthopedics and sports medicine, and head and neck reconstructive surgery – to entering into a multiyear athletics partnership with Clemson University, Novant Health has demonstrated its commitment to expanding access and supporting community health initiatives.

Its biggest investment to date is the construction of a new hospital on Patewood Drive, slated to open to patients in late 2027. The medical campus will comprise a three-story hospital, a four-story medical office building, an ambulatory surgery center and a structured parking deck, and is designed to create one connected care experience for patients and staff.

“The Upstate is experiencing tremendous growth, and healthcare infrastructure needs to grow alongside it,” says Ryan Lee, Novant Health president of the Greenville area. “Our Patewood campus was intentionally designed as a destination for care, bringing together physicians, outpatient services and hospital care in a way that makes healthcare more convenient and connected for patients.”

Lee says, “This campus is a major milestone, but it’s only part of our broader vision for Greenville. The investments we are making throughout the community reflect our commitment to the Upstate and to being a long-term healthcare partner for the region.”
