Central Virginia is quickly becoming a hub for agribusinesses, thanks to its unique blend of metropolitan access and fertile farmland. This strategic location, coupled with the rising demand for sustainable food, has fueled impressive growth in the industry and a surge in job opportunities. Today, over 370 companies employ 5,600 skilled workers in the industry.
Well-known companies – such as AgroSpheres, Barboursville Vineyards, Battlefield Farms, Blue Mountain Brewery, Devils Backbone Brewing Co., Valente Pasta, and Willow Run Greenhouse Corp. – have seen continued success. In 2024, Better Future Farms opened a 14.5 acre hydroponic greenhouse and processing facility in Louisa to grow leafy greens, creating 38 jobs.
UVA’s Sustainability Lab at Morven Farm provides hands-on training for students. In addition, Piedmont Virginia Community College and Germanna Community College offer programs in biotechnology, horticulture, brewing and winemaking.

Central Virginia offers a unique ecosystem for defense and security careers. With Rivanna Station and North Fork UVA Discovery Park housing top intelligence agencies, the region attracts major defense contractors.
In 2024, Aerojet Rocketdyne, a subsidiary of L3Harris Technologies, announced an expansion of its Orange County site. The investment will add 80 new jobs and increase solid rocket motor production.
