Resident health is a priority in the Puyallup/Sumner region of Washington. MultiCare Good Samaritan Hospital is available to assist individuals with everything from obstetrics and pain management to cancer and primary care. However, several area businesses provide services that address the other side of the health coin – staying healthy in Puyallup and Sumner through prevention and wellness.

Nutritious Options in Puyallup and Sumner

For more than 40 years, the Puyallup Farmers Market has been a family-friendly gathering place focused on healthy living and community.

“On any given Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., you’ll find up to 140 vendors offering a vast array of handcrafted and homegrown products,” says Jodi Stroh, the market’s director.

Located in downtown Puyallup’s Pioneer Park Pavilion, the market includes artists and crafters, live music, two food courts featuring freshly prepared meals, and a playground and spray park for kids.

“Fresh produce, meat, seafood, eggs and small-batch artisan foods provide our attendees with a host of options that are nutritional and without preservatives,” Stroh says.

For residents looking for nutrition and lifestyle advice, Peak Performance & Prevention in Puyallup provides health coaching as well as other services like sports performance, regenerative medicine and hormone replacement therapy.

Relaxation and Prevention

Another key part of wellness is relaxation, which residents can achieve by visiting Swift Hypnosis in Puyallup. Here, visitors are guided into a safe, naturally focused state. Other options include Omni Yoga Studio, which offers different kinds of yoga, like traditional and specialized, and Massage Time Spa, which offers 60-, 90- and 120-minute sessions. Both are in Puyallup.

Puyallup’s Chiropractic Northwest & Massage offers a wide range of services, including massage, to help people achieve their health and wellness goals. Dr. Casey Carter says the practice approaches each person’s needs and goals individually.

“Rather than have patients fit into one technique, we find what combination fits them best,” he says. “We offer everything from gentle adjustments that don’t require the ‘crack’ that some dislike to more hands-on manual adjustments.”

To best prevent issues from arising, the office prioritizes education.

“I want patients to know exactly what, why and how their actions affect their health and wellness, then give them ways to make smarter, healthier decisions,” Carter says. “Through education, we can change each person one at a time. Over time, those people educate others. I feel that success is more than just a number, but rather measured in terms of how many families and generations of families I can help lead toward a happier and healthier lifestyle.”

Fun and Fitness

Need to get your heart pumping? The region has plenty of options. F45 Training South Hill in Puyallup offers functional group fitness classes, while Fitness Quest, also in Puyallup, offers boot camp, cardio sculpt and personal training.

“Our mission is to help our members realize their most passionate fitness quest at the greatest integrated wellness, sport and fitness center in the world,” says Brad Swartz, who runs the organization with his wife, Diana, and their four children. “Our very low-cost memberships include a monthly private training session for each member.”

That professional assistance is one of six components of their program, which also includes cardiovascular fitness, strength training, nutrition, specialized supplements, and fun and relaxation.

Speaking of fun and relaxation, the family also owns Daffodil Bowl.

“We’ve had bowling in our family for three generations,” Swartz says. “When someone joins the club, we give them a buy-one, get-one bowling pass to introduce them to it. Bowling really affects your core in a positive way. It helps with balance and hand-eye coordination.”

The businesses were named the Best Fitness Center and Best Bowling Center in The Seattle Times’ 2023 Best in the PNW. “We’re very family-friendly,” Swartz says. “We believe that if the whole family gets involved, then wellness will take place within the family because they are all being educated; they are all working out together.”
