Situated on the edge of the Permian Basin, Artesia is a prime location for oilfield-related businesses. With its small town, family-friendly atmosphere and outstanding quality of life, it appeals to workforce talent. Entrepreneurs and established businesses alike can thrive here. “If you want to do it, there certainly is a way to do it here,” Klein says.
The city also offers targeted economic incentives and space for industrial expansions. A housing development plan is fueling construction of new homes.
“Our industrial park has recently expanded and offers affordable lease rates and options to buy. Our retail and service sectors also have room for growth, giving entrepreneurs plenty of opportunity,” Klein says. Artesia benefits from abundant water supplies, competitive water and energy rates, and no impact fees further incentivizes development here.
While oil and gas remain a major economic driver, the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center – home to all U.S. Border Patrol training – has a significant impact on Artesia’s economy and culture, adding diversity to the area. Health care, agriculture and refining also contribute to a strong business base.
“As a whole, the community has invested in one-of-a-kind facilities such as the aquatic center and public library, along with fairgrounds and a recreation center now under construction,” says Mayor Jon Henry. “Our schools are heavily supported by the private sector, providing teachers and students with state-of-the-art facilities.”
The Chase Foundation and other supporters provide an average of $3 million annually in scholarships to college- and trade-bound students, an investment that helps motivate many graduates to return to and invest in Artesia after completing their education or certification.
Klein says, “We like to say in Artesia you’ll find a sparse population, but a dense ‘cool factor.”
