Newark Galerie Builds Community at BALL HILL The Arcade
BALL HILL The Arcade is defining Newark’s growing arts community through collaboration and connection. Since opening in January 2025, co-owners Kevin Connell and Christopher Stokes Moseley have used their galerie (French for gallery) to connect artists and community members through conversation and shared appreciation for creative work.
“BALL HILL The Arcade is an evolving galerie space championing the fine work of artists and the other beautiful items that fill the sanctuaries of our homes,” Connell says. “We are committed to growing opportunities for diverse communities of emerging and established artists and to expanding their audiences.”
The galerie’s inventory spans time and geography, from European and American works dating to the 1850s to contemporary glass, ceramics and paintings. Connell says “even though the artists in our galerie are contemporary artists, our galerie stands on the shoulders of history.”
Though the space measures only 11 by 38 feet, BALL HILL The Arcade features artists from Newark and beyond, including Sallie Cochran, Lisa Holtsberry, Michael Kennedy, Dominic LaRiccia, Lindsey McCutchen and others.
Entering the space, visitors feel like they’re being transported somewhere new, but the galerie remains in the local community.
Creative Connections
Connell says artists regularly stop by to introduce themselves and show photos of their work. “Not everyone is right for us, but many have been,” he adds. “We want to nurture artists and help them find a home for selling their art.”
The galerie’s structure even gives artists a larger share of proceeds as part of its commitment to fairness. Beyond exhibiting art, Connell represents the galerie as part of the Licking County Foundation’s Around the Table committee, which includes organizations such as The Midland Theatre, The Works and the Newark-Granville Symphony Orchestra.
The group studies funding and collaboration challenges across the region’s cultural landscape. Members are guided by expertise, vision and the desire for growth.
Looking ahead, BALL HILL The Arcade plans to expand its programming in 2026.
The galerie will exhibit ceramic works by Newark High School art students and host a series of soirées for them to present their pieces publicly. Additional events will include artist book signings and monthly conversations on technique and process.
The upcoming projects represent the next step in BALL HILL The Arcade’s evolution. “2026 is our year to add layers,” Connell says, describing the effort as a continuation of their mission to elevate Newark’s art scene.
