Well-being and work-life balance aren’t just buzzwords in Rapid City – the community has cultivated an environment in which families can trade the daily grind for high-energy adventure and deep restoration in equal measure. Dubbed the “Barks, Bikes and Brews” lifestyle, it’s a draw for the whole household. 

Four-Legged Fun 

Everything is better when furry family members are welcome alongside their humans. Many local businesses like downtown’s Murphy’s Pub & Grill and Essence of Coffee have pup-tastic patios. The city’s extensive network of parks, including six (yes, six!) off-leash dog parks, offers plenty of room for sniffing, retrieving, swimming, jumping, roughhousing and other assorted zoomies. 

Two-Wheeled Transport 

Whether you’re looking for smooth sailing on paved city paths or the satisfying crunch of gravel under the tires of a mountain bike, Rapid City offers trails for every bicyclist. Younger kids and entry-level riders can hone their skills at Robbinsdale Park’s Bicycle Playground, where ramps, tunnels and tracks provide great practice before hitting harder trails. The park is also home to a BMX race course. The city’s paved bike path (the Leonard Swanson Memorial Pathway) meanders along the banks of Rapid Creek for 10 miles, connecting lakes, parks and a farmers market. 

Also located in the heart of the city, 300-acre, dog-friendly Hanson-Larsen Memorial Park is a true urban gem, offering over 20 miles of multiuse trails that twist and turn around M Hill; stellar views of Rapid City reward those who make it to the summit. And less than an hour away, Black Hills National Forest boasts almost 500 miles of hiking and biking trails. 

Six-Pack of Suds 

Retrieving tennis balls and pedaling bikes is hard work, but bikers and barkers can rejuvenate by hitting up downtown Rapid City. Lined with retail, restaurants and public art, the area offers great ways to relax. 

With eight hometown breweries, the beer scene is diverse. A trio of local favorites include: 

Firehouse Brewing Co. has occupied an old fire station on Main Street since 1991. The oldest brewery in South Dakota, it now serves craft brewery staples and operates an adjacent restaurant, sports bar and winery tasting room. 

Lost Cabin Beer Co. keeps its core four brews on tap year-round but fills out the remainder of its beer list with over 20 other seasonal beers such as Tie Dye Wolverine (bourbon barrel-aged double IPA) and Electric Taco Truck (margarita-inspired sour gose). 

Finally, Woodland Republic Brewing & Blending pours wild-fermented and sour beers with creative flavor profiles such as chocolate and coconut stout or plum and strawberry sour ale. Bonus: Lost Cabin and Woodland Republic also welcome dogs.
