Pleasant on Purpose: The New Era of Mount Pleasant, Tennessee
Mount Pleasant is in a transformation – one that integrates infrastructure improvements with strategic investments designed to elevate quality of life and economic opportunity. Through a reimagined downtown corridor and a modernized regional airport, the city is positioning itself as an increasingly attractive place to live, work and do business.
Taking It to the Streets
The recently completed Downtown Improvement Project has remade Main Street from the sidewalks up. Expanded pedestrian pathways, upgraded utilities and historically styled, energy-efficient streetlights have transformed the corridor into a more walkable, welcoming space.
Landscaping and public art installations add visual highlights while reinforcing the small-town character that defines Mount Pleasant. The improvements aren’t just cosmetic; they’re designed to support long-term growth while making the downtown more inviting and livable today.
“We are just waiting for the new landscaping to burst into bloom,” says Caroline Rash, director of Mount Pleasant Forward, a nonprofit dedicated to tourism, local business development and community engagement. “We are planning a local Garden Club initiative to help maintain the beauty of the space and involve the community in taking ownership of our town and working together to care for our home.”
The investment is paying dividends. Mount Pleasant’s downtown square now hosts 18 businesses and four local banks, and the momentum is building. Since fall 2025, 10 new businesses have opened, with more on the way.
“When you walk around our newly renovated downtown, the energy of progress and forward motion is palpable,” Rash says. “We are seeing a lot more people experiencing our small-business scene. Between the lovely, historically inspired updates and the comforting sound of the beautifully lit fountain – not to mention plenty of seating – you just get the feeling that this is a place where you need to sit and stay a while. Balancing the preservation of our history with a passion for progress is a challenge, but Mount Pleasant is doing so rather beautifully. I like to say that ‘We are Pleasant on purpose.’”
Cleared for Takeoff
While downtown reimagines itself at street level, a parallel transformation is underway at Maury County Regional Airport.
Construction is complete on a new terminal, replacing what had been the oldest terminal in Tennessee with what will be the newest. The facility’s design reflects the history of Maury County and features a conference room, a comfortable lobby and a pilot’s lounge. The airport has acquired eight additional acres, with plans to attract private investment for future hangar development.
A recent $8 million runway resurfacing project – complete with LED lighting along the full 6,000- foot stretch – has modernized the facility’s core infrastructure.
The numbers tell a compelling story. The airport generates an estimated $13.9 million in annual economic impact for Maury County, sells roughly 20,000 gallons of fuel each month, and supports flight training, corporate aviation and freight activity tied to the region’s strong manufacturing base.
“We see the positive impact on the economy every day,” says Ashley Schang, airport manager. “Middle Tennessee is in the middle of an extraordinary growth period, and this airport is very much part of that story.”
Schang points to the airport’s role as a practical business tool that gives the region a competitive edge when companies are evaluating where to put down roots.
“When a company representative can fly in to visit a job site or meet with a client and fly out the same day, that’s a real advantage,” she says. “For any major manufacturer looking to expand, an airport with a 6,000-foot runway is a significant asset. It helps make us competitive in site selection and helps attract new investment and new jobs to the region.”
The airport also draws business from beyond Maury County’s borders. Williamson County has no general aviation airport of its own, making Maury County Regional an important resource for the corporate and private aviation traffic from the state’s wealthiest county.
“We’re seeing real, sustained growth – around the region and around our airport,” Schang says. “The investment we’ve made in this facility sends a message that Maury County is serious about being competitive.”
Together, these projects tell a larger story about Mount Pleasant’s future. While a revitalized downtown creates a more livable, connected community, a modernized airport expands the city’s economic infrastructure and regional reach. Both investments ensure the city is as accessible to global industry as it is welcoming to local residents.
