As Williamson County continues to attract new businesses and support existing industries, developing homegrown talent remains a key part of the region’s economic development strategy.

Local leaders understand that a strong talent pipeline is essential to sustaining long-term prosperity, so Williamson, Inc., the county’s economic development organization, established a free online internship directory to connect local businesses with residents looking to change or grow their careers.

Why Internships Keep Talent Close to Home

“We hope that this program showcases the career opportunities available to the next generation,” says Nathan Zipper, chief economic development officer for Williamson, Inc. “We want the residents of Williamson County to know their children and grandchildren have the ability to stay in the community they were raised in while accessing world-class, diverse career opportunities.

“When we retain our students, we often retain their families’ long-term investment in the community as well. That’s why internships are not just about filling jobs today; they’re about strengthening Williamson County’s workforce, economy and quality of life for generations to come.”

More Than 100 Local Employers

In its first year, the directory featured more than 100 companies, from nonprofits and small businesses to national and international conglomerates spanning finance, marketing and development.

“Internships are more than a workforce development tool; they’re a talent and family retention strategy,” Zipper says. “Williamson County is known for having some of the best schools in Tennessee, and families make significant investments to live here because they want opportunity for their children. As those students graduate high school and pursue higher education, we want them to see a future for themselves right here at home.”

From Intern to Career at Schneider Electric

One example of the program’s success is Selvana Roumana, a supply chain project manager at Schneider Electric in Franklin.

Turning an internship into a promising career, Roumana says career growth opportunities, such as the one at Schneider Electric, are a big part of why she chooses to stay in Williamson County.

Zipper says this is exactly why the Williamson County internship directory was established.

Too often, the region’s young talent leaves for college and never returns.

“Meaningful internship experiences help bridge that gap by connecting students to local employers, career pathways and professional networks before they enter the workforce full time,” Zipper says. “They allow students to see that they don’t have to leave Williamson County to find rewarding careers and opportunities for advancement. At the same time, they help employers build relationships with future talent and create a pipeline of young professionals who are more likely to return after college or choose to begin their careers here.”
