Moving to Greenville, SC: Quality of Life, Cost & Culture
Having recently surpassed the 1 million population milestone in the metro area, it’s officially undeniable: Greenville is growing. In fact, the city has emerged as No. 2 in the nation for young homebuyer wealth growth. But that’s not the only thing drawing folks here – there are plenty of perks that make for an unparalleled quality of life.

Affordability
Whether looking at day-to-day expenses or the cost of housing, Greenville comes out on top, delivering great value all around. Housing is more affordable than nearby Asheville or Charlotte, and the versatility of options is particularly appealing. Overall cost of living is approximately 9.5% lower than the national average, while housing costs come in at 26.8% lower, and utilities are about 11.4% lower than the national average. But residents aren’t just paying less – they’re getting more for what they’re paying, especially when taking into account all the amenities the city has to offer.
Active Lifestyle
It’s easy to live an active lifestyle in Greenville – one might say it’s encouraged, even. With extensive trail networks for running, biking and walking, not to mention the many parks and green spaces throughout the city and nearby lakes and mountains, staying active is second nature.
“The community itself is very active,” says Taylor Duckett, a fitness and nutrition coach who’s lived in the city for five years. “Young and old, I see people out on the trail with their dogs or kids or just by themselves – the city just has such a good balance of indoor and outdoor activities.”

Vibrant Downtown
Experience one of America’s consistently recognized best downtowns. In the past ten years, Greenville’s downtown has turned into a charming, walkable destination with a palpable welcoming energy on every corner.
“Downtown has undergone a complete 180,” says Nelson Weston, a lifestyle show host who grew up in the city. “The growth has kicked into overdrive, and now there are so many businesses and restaurants that have revitalized it.”
Plus, there’s always something happening downtown, from festivals to farmers markets to free live music.
Foodie Central
The city is definitely an up-and-comer in the national foodie scene. Local chefs have received James Beard Award nominations, and multiple restaurants have been recognized by the prestigious Michelin Guide: American South: One Michelin Star Scoundrel and Michelin-recommended Soby’s, The Anchorage, Jianna and Topsoil Restaurant. Downtown alone is home to over 200 restaurants, offering a diverse, delicious selection.
“Walking downtown around dinnertime, you really can’t go wrong with anywhere you stop in,” Duckett says. “The restaurants are just amazing.”
From elevated Southern staples to Italian, French and Asian cuisine, there’s something for every palate. And if you need to wash it all down with a cocktail or brew, there are plenty of places for that, too.

Amazing Weather
Greenville gets a full four seasons, but none of them are extreme by any stretch. The winters are mild, with infrequent snow, while the summer is warm but not exceedingly hot. And spring and fall? Practically idyllic, especially when the leaves start changing. The climate is the unsung hero when it comes to the many festivals that happen throughout the year, making the experiences so much more pleasant.
New Developments
As more people flock to Greenville, the city continues to grow and add new developments – both residential and commercial – to accommodate growing demand. Whether that’s transforming the West Village by breathing new life into old mills or investing in more mixed-use developments, there’s always something on the horizon. The European-inspired BridgeWay Station is a great example of this, with its walkable design and blend of restaurants, retail, entertainment and residential space.

Entertainment Galore
There’s always something to do in Greenville, no matter your preferences. Into sports? Go to a baseball or soccer game and root for Greenville’s home teams. Love music? Catch a concert at any number of the city’s incredible venues, from Bon Secours Wellness Arena to Swanson’s Warehouse and everything in between. Craving a theater production? Take your pick from the Peace Center, Greenville Theatre, Centre Stage and more.
