Michelin Stars & Award-Winning Restaurants in Greenville, SC
Greenville is making a name for itself as one of the South’s most exciting food destinations. In fact, the arrival of the acclaimed Michelin Guide: American South confirmed what Greenville residents and diners have known for years – something special is happening here. The city’s burgeoning culinary reputation was further cemented when it served as the backdrop for hosting episodes of “Top Chef” season 23. Hidden gems are becoming sought-after destinations, and the awards, television exposure and chef recognitions are just the start.
Chefs like Joe Cash of Scoundrel – the first to receive a Michelin star in Greenville – are proving that the talent fueling the city’s rise doesn’t have to come from bigger culinary hubs like New York City or Charleston. Sometimes, that talent is cultivated right here in the Upstate.
Chef Cash graduated from The Culinary Institute of the Carolinas (CIC) at Greenville Technical College in 2008, and his success reflects a broader shift taking place across the South Carolina city.
“We’re very proud of his accomplishments, but we’re also just proud of who he is as a person,” says Chef Kristen Grissom, department head at CIC.

A Cup of Ambition
Chef Cash’s Michelin recognition is not the only reason Greenville’s dining scene made it to the national spotlight. Over the last decade, the city has grown from a handful of standout spots into a thriving ecosystem of chef-driven restaurants, global flavors and culinary ambition.
“In the last 14 years, I’ve seen an explosion of new restaurants in this area,” Chef Grissom says. “We’re seeing innovation in food service here, and the food is becoming a tourism driver, not just a local amenity.”
That culinary evolution has started to attract national attention, and the arrival of the Michelin Guide: American South this year only amplified the momentum that’s been building here.
For Chef Grissom, the recognition is gratifying but not surprising.
“Michelin is just finally realizing what we’ve known all along,” she says. “We know that we’ve got a great food scene here. We know that we have talented individuals here.”
She believes Greenville’s greatest strength is its willingness to innovate.
“Our country is hungry for what Greenville has, and what we have is innovation,” Chef Grissom says. “We’ve got chefs that are able to be really creative, and global cuisines that we’re able to bring out in this area.”

That’s Amore
Few people have witnessed Greenville’s culinary growth as closely as Chef Michael Kramer, owner of one of Greenville’s most popular Italian dining spots, Jianna.
Chef Kramer has been part of Greenville’s dining scene for more than a decade and says the city’s evolution is impossible to ignore.
“We’re getting more variety,” he says. “We’re getting some top-caliber chefs coming into the city. They’re bringing in different food styles, ideas and higher-quality food.”
Jianna was also among the few Greenville restaurants recognized in the Michelin Guide: American South, an honor Chef Kramer never expected.
“Michelin was always in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles and Vegas, so it wasn’t something we thought about,” he says. “When it was announced, and we made it as one of the five from the Upstate here, it was obviously an incredible feeling.”
And that recognition has elevated expectations for guests dining at Jianna, but Chef Kramer welcomes the challenge.
“When you have that badge on the front door, people have a certain level of expectation,” he says. “It brings people to the city, that’s for sure.”
He points to Chef Cash, whose Michelin star and James Beard Award recognition have helped reshape perceptions of Greenville as a serious dining destination.
“People are coming here to eat,” Chef Kramer says. “Now people look at Greenville and say, ‘Well, we can visit, but we really ought to eat there.'”

Serving up Success
The success of Cash’s Scoundrel and Kramer’s Jianna is only proof that Greenville’s culinary rise is more than a moment. It’s evidence that world-class talent can be nurtured in the Upstate and that Michelin-level achievement is no longer something chefs leave Greenville to pursue, but something they can accomplish right here.
“Joe’s a great example of how far our chefs can go,” Chef Grissom says.
“We’re only looking for better things in the future, and I think there’s going to be more Michelin recommendations coming very soon.”
And if Greenville’s recent rise is any indication, the city won’t be waiting long for the rest of the world to catch up.
