Locals have lots to love when it comes to living in San Joaquin County. East of the Bay Area, communities here offer California living at a more affordable price tag, and a growing number of family-friendly attractions put this region on the map as a nice place to raise kids. The strong sense of community also contributes to a family-friendly atmosphere, says Gary Singh, mayor of Manteca.
In Manteca, a Family Entertainment Zone (FEZ) Plan is in the works. While the city is already home to Big League Dreams, a large-scale sports facility, and the Great Wolf Lodge indoor water park and resort, even more recreation and family-friendly amenities are planned.
“Our motto is ‘We’re the family city,’” Singh says.
The community, he explains, has a nice mix of mom-and-pop shops, street fairs and community festivals as well as commercial businesses.
The county also boasts numerous parks and quality schools, making it an ideal place to raise a family.
Plenty of Places to Explore
“The recreational activities and outdoor activities are boundless,” says Ed Wanket, who is an outdoors enthusiast and, with his wife, has raised six children in the region.
Some of his family’s favorite outdoor adventures include scenic hikes (bring your binoculars; the birdwatching is spectacular in spots along the Mokelumne River in north Lodi) and kayaking trips in the Delta.
“San Joaquin County is a boater’s paradise as well,” Wanket says. “Whether it’s fishing, water skiing, wakeboarding, sailing or just cruising, there are a thousand miles of waterways.”
Another special spot is Micke Grove Regional Park in Lodi, which is a San Joaquin County treasure, Wanket says. The 132-acre green space features hiking trails, a Japanese garden and even a zoo.
Day trips and weekend getaways are easy to take from San Joaquin County, too. The region is centrally located, which means you’re three hours or less away from hitting the slopes at Lake Tahoe, hiking among waterfalls and Sequoia trees in Yosemite National Park or catching some waves on California’s famed surfing beaches.
Diversity Is Prized
Stockton has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report as the Most Diverse City in America. The region has a majority minority population, with the largest ethnic group being Hispanic or Latino and making up 42% of the population. Plus, more than three dozen languages are spoken in San Joaquin County.
A number of festivals throughout the year celebrate the county’s diverse cultures, including the Chinese New Year Celebration, Cinco de Mayo, Stockton Black Family Day and Jewish Food Fair.
Careers Close to Home
San Joaquin County residents can find fulfilling careers without enduring the long commutes. Industries like manufacturing, construction, distribution and warehouse, food and beverage processing, higher education, and health care serve as major employers in the region.
The county’s central location also means that those who live here also have easy access to the Silicon Valley and the San Francisco Bay Area markets.
The median home price in California has surpassed the $750,000 mark, but newcomers to San Joaquin County can find properties well under that number. In fact, the average home value in the county is over $542,000, according to Zillow.
Not only are homes more affordable, but residents also have their pick of several new master-planned, amenity-rich communities across the region. For example, those who call River Islands home can enjoy access to riverfront trails, lakefront views, shops and restaurants, and a commuter train.
