7 Can’t-Miss Overland Park Events

There’s no better way to get a sense of a community than to experience its events. Not only do they draw people from all walks of life, but they allow attendees to come together and share things like art, music and food. Overland Park, Kansas, has plenty of great events on the calendar throughout the year. Here is just a sample of the Overland Park events you need to check out. 

1. Downtown Overland Park Art Fair

Immerse yourself in a bustling outdoor space filled with colorful booths and tables that showcase unique creations by local artisans. Chat with the artists, learn about their techniques and enjoy the festive atmosphere provided by the live music, food trucks and various activities. 

“This is a place where art feels accessible, and you’re encouraged to explore and ask questions,” says Krysten Brown, event activation coordinator for the Downtown Overland Park Partnership. “Many of the vendors are emerging or self-taught artists, and by being there, you’re supporting their work and connecting directly with the people behind the art.”

2. Overland Park Farmers Market

Open April through November, you can enjoy local produce at Overland Park Farmers Market at specific times during the week: Saturday mornings from April through November, and Wednesday mornings from June through September. And keep an eye out for their special holiday market in December. Fun fact: This market won the title of best farmers market in the country in 2022, so you’re sure to be in for a treat (or two or three) whenever you attend.

3. Luminary Walk 

This holiday tradition shines bright. Recently recognized as one of the Top 10 Best Botanical Gardens for Holiday Lights in the nation by USA Today, the Luminary Walk at Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens is a must-see activity during the holidays. Stroll along the lit paths surrounded by the glow of candles and light displays. 

“Each area offers something magical, from sparkling trees and glowing landscapes to serene spaces for reflection,” says Desireé Pickert, marketing communications specialist for the Overland Park City Manager’s Office.

4. Overland Park Fall Festival 

This festival is everything you could want in an autumnal celebration. It features live music, entertainment, fantastic food and plenty of vendors. It has an artisan fair, with more than 100 regional makers offering everything from seasonal and home decor to artwork, jewelry, candles and more. 

“With so many attractions, this free, family-friendly event has something for everyone,” Pickert says. “It’s a beloved tradition that continues to grow each year.” 

5. Giggle Time Children’s Program 

This delightful monthly event encourages little ones to laugh, wiggle and have a blast. It’s held on the first Wednesday of every month from March through December and features everything from music and stories to puppet shows and bubbles, and it has a different entertainer each month. 

“The Giggle Time Children’s Program provides a valuable opportunity for little ones to build skills while enjoying these enriching experiences,” Pickert says. 

This event typically takes place at Tomahawk Ridge Community Center. 

6. Star Spangled Spectacular 

This vibrant Independence Day celebration is one of the city’s most lively events, and it’s packed with fun for the whole family. Food trucks, fireworks and festivities are event staples, not to mention the live music performances and sense of community that the event fosters. The fireworks start around 10 p.m. 

“Guests are encouraged to bring blankets, chairs and coolers and settle in for the evening, enjoying a relaxing and welcoming atmosphere,” Pickert says. “It’s a cherished event that captures the spirit of summer and the joy of celebrating with your community.”

7. Concerts in the Park 

These free summer concerts are held in beautiful Thompson Park, which provides the perfect setting for listening to music and spending time with family, friends and neighbors. Plus, they make for the perfect date night. A variety of genres are represented throughout the series, from jazz and rock to Latin and country, so there really is something for everyone. 

“Each concert includes an added bonus, like a car show, a sidewalk sale or fun games and activities, making it a great way to spend an evening,” Pickert says.
