Supporting Montgomery County’s life sciences ecosystem are a number of major hospitals that participate in research and clinical trials, as well as provide world-class health care to residents.

The hospitals range from more than a century old to brand new, both private and nonprofit, offering a wide range of services. Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring is one of the largest hospitals in Maryland, with a full array of community-based health-care services. Both Shady Grove Adventist Hospital and Washington Adventist Hospital, part of the Adventist HealthCare system, were named top performers on key quality measures for 2012, among just 16 in Maryland to earn the distinction. Also, both hospitals were designated as top regional hospitals in 2013 US News & World Report rankings.

Kaiser Permanente in Gaithersburg is in a new 175,000-square-foot facility that serves members with services from more than 350 physicians and staff. Suburban Hospital, a member of the Johns Hopkins Health System, is a nonprofit, community-based hospital that serves as the designated trauma center for the county. One of the oldest hospitals in the region, MedStar Montgomery Hospital, provides comprehensive services to the community, regardless of ability to pay.

Historic Walter Reed National Military Medical Center is a tertiary care destination that provides care to military members and their beneficiaries, providing services in more than 100 clinics and specialties. As the world’s largest military medical center, The NMMC serves nearly 1 million people per year and is the first stop for wounded, ill and injured service personnel. In addition, the county is home to specialty locations, outpatient centers and pediatric care from Children’s National Medical Center. Children’s National is the only exclusive provider of pediatric care in the region, and the only freestanding children’s hospital in the area, serving more than 360,000 patients each year.
