Be sure to add these eight fun things to do in New Mexico to your itinerary:

1. White Sands Missile Range Museum

If you’re fascinated with military history and weaponry, this museum in Alamogordo is a must-visit. The exhibits focus especially on the Frontier Army, spanning its history from the 1800s to the Manhattan Project, the Cold War and beyond. Get up close and personal with missiles, rockets and other historical artifacts.

2. Petroglyph National Monument

At this monument in Albuquerque, hike volcanic trails and discover thousands of ancient images carved by Native Americans and early Spanish settlers. Learn how the Petroglyph site offers a glimpse into the lives of people who lived centuries ago.

3. New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science

4. Explora Science Center and Children’s Museum

Prepare to become a hands-on explorer for the day at this incredible learning center in Albuquerque, which proudly claims to “put people’s learning in their own hands.” With more than 250 exhibit activities in art, technology and science, Explora is a compelling place for young learners to experience education in a fun, interactive way.

5. National Museum of Nuclear Science & History

Formerly known as the National Atomic Museum, the National Museum of Nuclear Science & History is dedicated to all things atoms. With both indoor and outdoor exhibits, plus multiple classrooms and a theater, it’s an ideal location for learning about nuclear energy and its impact on global affairs, especially for those who are particularly science- and history-minded.

6. Manhattan Project National Historical Park

Los Alamos is famously the site of the Manhattan Project, where the atomic bomb was developed, and this national historic park now stands in recognition of that momentous achievement. Visitors may tour multiple sites on the property, including assembly buildings and bunkers.

7. NRAO Very Large Array

The National Radio Astronomy Observatory’s “Very Large Array” in Magdalena is aptly named, as it is a very large collection – 28, to be specific – of very large radio telescopes. Visitors can take a self-guided tour and explore exhibits at the visitor center. This somewhat scenic detour is well worth the trip for astronomy enthusiasts.

8. International UFO Museum and Research Center

Lean into the unknown and the possibility of unidentified flying objects at this unique museum in Roswell, which is dedicated to documenting unexplained phenomena and UFO events. Inspired by the Roswell Incident (1947), this museum seeks to collect and present material relating to otherworldly technologies.
