Greenville, SC, makes it easy to focus on health, starting with recreational facilities and fitness classes that offer fun and convenient ways to stay active and fit. Whether it’s kickboxing at 9Round Fitness, workouts at HOTWORX infrared fitness studio, or spin, strength training and yoga at SPENGA, there is something for everyone.

The area is also home to several high-quality hospitals, serving the region’s primary and specialty care needs with a variety of locations and services.

Recognized for Quality

Spartanburg Regional’s Pelham Medical Center is nationally recognized for orthopedic and spine care, rated by U.S. News & World Report as high performing in hip fracture and back surgery. For the past two years, Healthgrades has placed Pelham Medical Center in the top 5% of hospitals nationwide for outstanding patient experience.

“We’re focused on having a world-class place for patients to receive care and for our staff and physicians to practice,” says Tony Kouskolekas, hospital president. “ This focus enables our team to deliver superior experiences and outcomes for patients.”

Its campus off Interstate 85 and Highway 14 is also home to Gibbs Cancer Center, which has received national recognition for a commitment to innovation and patient experience through two clinical trials that will improve patient outcomes for generations to come.

The Tomosynthesis Mammographic Imaging Screening Trial, a 3D imaging approach to breast cancer detection, and the Cancer Moonshot Biobank trial, a research program that uses biospecimens to study how cancer treatments affect patients, both received honors from the National Cancer Institute last year.

Its athletic trainers care for approximately 38,000 young student athletes at all division levels. The clinic also runs a nationally recognized sports medicine fellowship program, training the next generation of surgeons, and is involved in many research projects looking for ways to improve outcomes and better take care of patients.

Prisma Health Steadman Hawkins Injury and Fracture Treatment Clinic offers after-hours orthopedic care for injuries that have occurred within the last two weeks, helping patients avoid a trip to the emergency department while still getting the care they need.

“We’re proud to treat patients from all walks of life, whether it’s an elite athlete improving his speed by milliseconds, a patient hurt in a major trauma or someone who needs care after having had a slip-and-fall accident,” says Dr. Michael Kissenberth, a nationally recognized sports medicine physician who is the clinic’s medical director. “Physicians, surgeons, therapists and patients work as a team toward the goal of full recovery and getting our patients back into their best active lives possible.”

What Matters Most

Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital of Greenville is part of Encompass Health, the nation’s largest system of rehabilitation hospitals.

“We are dedicated to improving the lives of patients by helping them regain independence after a life-changing illness or injury,” says Joshua Trout, hospital CEO.

He says one in three patients in the U.S. currently receiving inpatient rehabilitative care receives it at an Encompass Health hospital.

The facility in Greenville provides inpatient physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy for patients recovering from debilitating illnesses and injuries, including strokes, amputations, brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, and other complex neurological and orthopedic conditions. Patients receive at least three hours of therapy five days per week, and 24-hour nursing oversight and availability.

“Our intentionality with personalized therapies is what makes our rehabilitation programs so powerful. With most of our patient stays averaging from 12 to 14 days, our compassionate staff can truly connect with each of our patients and their families. Adjusting to a serious health condition can take time, and the road to recovery can sometimes be a long journey. As their extended support system, we share their desire of getting back to doing what matters most to them.”

Growth in Biosciences

In addition to health care, Greenville and South Carolina boast a growing life sciences industry. In fact, 42 of the state’s 46 counties, Greenville being among them, have at least one life sciences company. Statewide, more than 670 life sciences companies represent fields including biochemistry, biology, botany and zoology, according to SCbio, an economic development organization exclusively focused on life sciences. The industry generates more than $25 billion in annual economic impact in South Carolina.

In the Greenville area, life sciences companies include Bausch & Lomb, International Vitamin Corp., Luxor Scientific and Nutra Manufacturing, as well as tenants of Main Street Labs.

The newest contributor to the life sciences industry’s success in the Greenville region is Erchonia Corp., a global laser technology manufacturer whose lasers provide powerful therapeutic effects to humans at the cellular level. Erchonia has relocated its headquarters from Florida to Greenville, opening a $6.7 million custom facility at Greenville’s Southchase Industrial Park.
