Johnson City Schools plays a critical role in the region’s workforce development efforts, preparing students for success in college and careers, and new superintendent Dr. Erin Slater plans to continue that tradition.

After serving nearly a decade as a superintendent in Iowa, Slater brings her 30 years of leadership experience in education to Johnson City Schools.

What is your vision for Johnson City Schools, and what specific goals do you hope to achieve?

My vision for Johnson City Schools is to have a laser-like focus on doing what’s best for the kids. My goals are to provide support and resources to our buildings that allow our staff to challenge our students into being the best they can be academically, socially and emotionally. Johnson City Schools will continue to sustain and grow a variety of programs, pathways and opportunities for our students PK-12.

How has your experience in education prepared you for this role, and what leadership qualities do you bring?

This is my 34th year in education. I have been a teacher, an assistant principal, a building principal, a curriculum director, an assistant superintendent and for the past nine years a superintendent of schools prior to coming here. I believe in having a shared leadership vision between the Board of Education, administrators and teachers. Having a shared vision allows an organization to work toward a common goal. I pride myself on being a collaborative person and having a high standard of visibility.

What initiatives or programs do you plan to prioritize to ensure that students have access to a high-quality education and resources?

Johnson City Schools is committed to providing a high-quality education for every student. We continue to prioritize analyzing data for student achievement. Both at the district level and at the school level, teachers and leaders look for evidence and trends of student groups’ performance levels to ask questions including, ‘What do we do when students demonstrate they know the material, and what do we do when students need more help and support?’ This drives the work that we do.

What do you enjoy most about living and working here?

Johnson City has such a variety of opportunities to engage with, including churches, the outdoors and restaurants. The city has a warm culture. I am honored to be a part of this community.
