A clock starts ticking from the moment heart attack symptoms begin. And when every minute matters, Maury Regional Medical Center (MRMC) is committed to reimagining cardiac care. 

“We take our commitment to delivering exceptional heart attack care very seriously,” says CEO Dr. Martin Chaney. “Responding quickly and getting patients who are experiencing a potential cardiac emergency assessed by a cardiology specialist and into our catheterization laboratories as soon as possible is critical. When I first started practicing medicine at Maury Regional 23 years ago, there were only two cardiologists on staff. Now, we have 16 cardiologists, including multiple interventional cardiac specialists, and a highly skilled supportive team standing at the ready.” 

Nationally Recognized 

From the moment 911 is called for a heart attack, Maury Regional Emergency Medical Services is trained to provide life-saving care. While in transit, they also deliver vitals and important information to the emergency and cardiology teams waiting at Maury Regional. 

Cardiac care is led by 16 board-certified cardiologists who are associated with Vanderbilt Heart–Columbia and Ascension Saint Thomas Heart Columbia. 

Advanced Technology 

Maury Regional is home to two cardiac catheterization laboratories that use the latest technology to enable cardiologists to investigate heart conditions, perform interventional procedures to open blocked vessels, and implant pacemakers and other devices. 

In 2022, the medical center invested $1.9 million in new cardiac catheterization technology, including the Azurion image-guided therapy system, which captures detailed images of patients’ coronary structures through minimally invasive techniques, facilitating faster diagnosis and treatment. 

The latest advancements have included intravascular lithotripsy, a safe and efficient treatment related to calcium buildup in the arteries. In 2024, Maury Regional became the first hospital in Tennessee to complete an ostial disease case using the Shockwave Intravascular Lithotripsy System. In 2025, the medical center introduced two new pieces to its catheterization labs: the CathWorks FFRangio System and the CardioMEMS HF System. 

CathWorks combines artificial intelligence and computational science to visualize a patient’s coronary arteries to assess and manage coronary artery disease (CAD). The CardioMEMS is a small, implantable device that allows care teams to monitor a patient’s heart failure status remotely and to make timely adjustments to treatment. 

Continued Care 

Following a heart attack, cardiac procedure or heart failure diagnosis, patients may benefit from cardiac rehabilitation to improve their health and heart function. To accomplish this, Maury Regional offers a comprehensive cardiopulmonary rehabilitation program aimed at allowing patients to resume normal activities as quickly and safely as possible. 

But cardiac care doesn’t only occur after a heart attack. Cardiac diagnostic testing can help to identify heart concerns before they escalate. Maury Regional also introduced a new noninvasive study known as coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA), which provides a detailed 3D image to help determine if there are abnormalities in blood flow, such as blockages and plaque buildup.
