#5. Carson City

Located at the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountain range, Carson City, Nev., provides residents with good access to amazing natural amenities, including Lake Tahoe, which is just 20 minutes away. Nearly a quarter of Carson City’s population is age 60 or older, but don’t think of this city as a sleepy little town. Residents engage in a variety of activities, from sports to artistic endeavors. During a typical year, Carson City residents enjoy an average of 300 days of blue skies and sunshine, which, coupled with low humidity and mild temperatures, makes being in the outdoors pleasant. Prime ski resorts, hiking areas and mountain streams are just a short drive away. The city’s 21 parks host a variety of sports and provide places to walk, exercise and enjoy the sunshine. Ross Gold Park includes a well-stocked fishing pond, and the city’s shooting range features a 40-position rifle range and a 20-station pistol range.

While casino gaming establishments appeal to many tourists, the city’s main cultural draws include the Nevada State Museum and the Nevada State Railroad Museum. Carson City hosts an eclectic array of events from musical theater productions and a summer jazz festival to author readings and book signings.
