Find out why the 13th Street District is a favorite gathering place in town.
“The 13th Street District is vibrant and alive,” says Aimee Deimerly-Snyder, a district board member and owner of Lillie Mae Chocolates. “When you look around the area, you can see people outside enjoying the beautiful Echo sculpture, eating in the restaurants and shopping in our businesses.”
The Echo sculpture, the centerpiece of the district, stands 34 feet tall and creates a welcome to the district. Echo is the work of Illinois artist Bruce White.
Visitors to the 13th Street District can watch chocolates being dipped by hand at Lillie Mae’s or eat a hamburger at The Flying Elbow, the 2022 winner of the Best Burger Contest sponsored by the state’s beef industry.
So Many Fun Activities in Marshalltown
The district hosts activities including Yoga in the Park, performances by the Marshalltown Municipal Band, and events like the Cultural Fiesta and Cruise-In. The annual Harvest Market features more than two dozen vendors selling farm produce, baked goods and artisan items. With food trucks, beer and wine tents, and children’s activities, the event attracts thousands of visitors to the district.
Deimerly-Snyder says the West End Park revitalization, which was damaged by the 2018 tornado, is good for the area. The multiphase project includes an outdoor event space, food truck parking, performance stage, restrooms, walking trail and game areas.
“We invite people down to the historic 13th Street District,” she says. “We have something for everyone.”
