Stellar Coffee Co. is one of the many breakfast hot spots in downtown Roswell.

There’s a lot to do in and around Roswell, NM, so it’s best to start the day early. Whether you’re a weekend warrior hitting the trails and bike paths early or you’re up at the crack of dawn seven days per week, check out some of these favorite spots to grab coffee and a quick bite or indulge in a full breakfast.

City Center

Downtown Roswell is the place to start for a strong cup of joe. Stellar Coffee Co.’s distinctive spaceship sign marks a universe of flavors found in seasonal drinks like pumpkin chai and Mexican mocha. The slightly eclectic space is flooded with light, and local art decorates the walls, giving customers a glimpse of the city’s artistic vibe.

For imbibers who prefer a bit of edge, family-owned Degenerate Coffee Co. roasts its own beans and boasts mochas made from real chocolate – no chocolate syrup on tap. Residents will appreciate its free local delivery.

For early birds, a cup of coffee is just the thing to prepare for a busy day in Roswell.

For central eats, check out the homey Martin’s Capitol Cafe (its website welcomes diners with a cheery “Hello, dear”) for the perfect blend of traditional American diner breakfast and Mexican dishes. When you visit, try the jalapeño sausage breakfast quesadilla.

South Side

One block south of downtown, a 3-mile stretch along Second Street boasts a quartet of great breakfast options.

Cowboy Cafe lives up to its name, with Western-themed decor adorning both the building’s exterior and dining room; cheekily named offerings like the Washtub Burrito (“big enough to share but so good you don’t want to”) and the Starving Cowboy Breakfast are on offer all day.

Roswell Donuts and Breakfast’s selection of airy doughnuts (both yeast and cake) is superb, and the bakery also turns out savory chile-cheese kolaches and ham-and-egg croissants.

La Escondida Cafe is another spot that serves up seriously satisfying food. The breakfast and lunch spot is skewed toward Mexican fare, with a smattering of American diner classics for breakfast, but don’t bypass the saucy, spicy, filling pork asado and eggs or huevos rancheros smothered in green salsa.

Finally, Geli’s Cafe, another local favorite that’s always crowded thanks to its quick, friendly service and enormous portions, is also known for its chilaquiles.

North Side

Head north of the city center for just a few miles, and you’ll find the Hot Bev Energy Cafe, which bills itself as a “caffeine dealer.” The menu is chock-full of invigorating coffee and energy drinks served in an inviting industrial setting.

For a full meal, Los Cerritos Mexican Kitchen’s breakfast options include chilaquiles smothered in chile verde with eggs and machaca (scrambled eggs studded with shredded beef, onions and chiles for a spicy kick). Now you are ready to tackle your day!
